Nikon is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018-2019 Nikon Photo Contest. This yearās Nikon Photo Contest, first held in 1969, celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. It is one of the largest photo contests in the world: for example, a record number of entries 97,369 from 33,000 participants from 170 countries and regions were submitted in the 2018-2019 contest. Entries were accepted in three categories: open subject matter, new generation and short film.
The 2018-2019 winners were selected by an independent international jury led by internationally renowned art director Neville Brody, who has retained his role as lead juror from last year.
About this yearās Nikon Photo Contest, Neville Brody said the following:
āThis competition poses many questions, including the role of photography in the future. Photography Changes Our Lives. Photos are everywhere today, and we perceive the world through photos rather than words. It is an international language that affects the kind of people we are and the kind of society we shape. Obviously, the role of photography will only increase in the future. The diverse works that have been awarded in this contest ā stories of sorts, bridges between people and events, and surprises ā will give rise to an interesting discussion about the world we live in and how we perceive it.ā.
Winners and runners-up in each category were chosen based on a variety of criteria, including appropriateness of theme, strength of message conveyed, and level of creativity. In addition to five gold medals, one entry won the āParticipantsā Choiceā award. Another special prize was given to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Nikon Photo Contest. A total of 47 awards were given. The Grand Prize winner will be announced at the official award ceremony in Tokyo on August 23, 2019.
The Nikon Photo Contest is designed to enrich the culture of photography for professionals and amateurs alike. Since the first edition of the competition in 1969, over 440,000 photographers from all over the world have participated with over 1,710,000 submissions, making it a truly international competition.
