Lensbaby has released a new Burnside 35mm f/2 lens.8, which allows you to adjust the form of bokeh and the degree of vignetting. The lens opens up a new world of creative possibilities when shooting landscapes or portraits, as well as being ideal for street photography.
The Burnside 35 is a wide angle version of the Petzval lens and has two diaphragms: a 6-blade primary and an 8-blade secondary. It captures bright, saturated images with an unusual curved bokeh or tinted areas in the frame corners. However, the degree of bokeh and the level of vignetting can be controlled by a 4-way slide control on the lens barrel which controls a second 8-blade iris.
Lensbaby explains, “To get spectacular bokeh with the Burnside 35 use the f/2 maximum open aperture.8 and see the shot at a distance of one meter or less from the lens. Also make sure there is a distance of at least 4 meters between your subject and the background. Choose richly textured backgrounds for more expressive bokeh. With the slider, you can adjust the degree of whirling. Keep in mind that the center area of your image will be sharp and the edges will be blurry, regardless of the aperture setting.”
Price and availability
Burnside 35 mm f/2.8 compatible with Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony A, Pentax K, Micro 4/3, Sony E, Fuji X and Samsung NX mounts. The lens is available for order on Lensbaby’s website for $500.
