Lensbaby has released a new set of 46mm macro filters that can be used with some of the company’s “bokeh effect” lenses, expanding their macro capabilities.

The kit consists of three macro filters that have the following dioptres: + 1, + 2 and +4. The filters are mounted on the front of the lens and can be screwed one on top of the other to achieve a higher degree of magnification. According to LensBaby, the light transmission of the optical system and image contrast will not be affected. All filters are multi-coated.

In Lensbaby’s product lineup this kit sits alongside the Art Filter Set that the company released last October, which consists of a diffraction 8-beam star filter, a 3-stop neutral filter and a circular polarizing filter.

Some key features of the macro filters from Lensbaby include their compact size, ease of use, and ability to attach directly onto the lens. They are designed to magnify the subject and create a shallow depth of field for artistic effects.

These filters are compatible with different camera models as long as they can be attached to the lens. However, it’s always advisable to check the compatibility with the specific camera and lens combination before purchasing.

The image quality when using these filters may differ compared to a traditional macro lens. While a dedicated macro lens provides superior image quality and clarity, the macro filters are more affordable and offer a unique creative distortion. The filters can produce dreamy or blurry effects, enhanced bokeh, and selective focus, adding an artistic touch to the images.

Unfortunately, I cannot provide sample images here, but Lensbaby’s website and online photography communities may have examples of images taken with their macro filters. It’s always useful to see the results firsthand to better understand the visual impact they can create.
