SVEN SPS-707 speaker system review: capacity of 25 W per channel is enough even for the cinema system in stereo mode

We received a box with the acoustics of the Finnish company

. This is not the first multimedia speaker we have tested. The glossy sides of the package show the speaker system itself framed in the brand blue and white coloring – everything is stylish and neat.

In the box, besides the speaker itself – a power cord standard “eight” , two-core stereo RCA – RCA cables, speaker wires – to connect the speakers with each other, instructions and remote control. Nice that there is a cable RCA – minijack 3.5. Of course, you can buy it, but not always and not everywhere. At least, it is on sale rarer than the usual one with red and white “tulips. This cable removes the problem of looking for adapters.

Deserves special attention remote control.

Having analyzed modern market of computer acoustics we came to the conclusion that no more than 13% of sets are equipped with remote controls – note that we are talking about wireless control.

The remote control is full-fledged – there are the on-off button, volume control, separate control of high and low frequencies and a three-position selector, correspondingly.

There are also mute and “Reset” button, – zeroing of the audio settings volume and frequency settings .

Appearance

But let’s get back to the speaker system: we get the speakers and examine them.

The casing is made of MDF, not solid wood, but nobody tries to hide it with fancy “mahogany” film.

Front panels are made of plastic. All neat and tidy. You can not see any traces of glue, no bad glue film and other unpleasant artifacts. Even for our eyes, accustomed to hi-fi acoustics, there was nothing to find fault with, which also indirectly indicates the seriousness of the company.

The mains cable is connected to one of the speakers, – it’s an active speaker, after all. Here is also where all the interface is located, the whole three audio inputs.

Besides the standard “red and white” stereo RCA jack there is another “twin brother” of the same kind and another input for minijack 3.5 mm, – you can connect up to three sources.

On the top panel of the “main” speaker, which has a built-in amplifier, there are four buttons: network, selector and two keys + and – for volume control. The selector button MODE , besides its main purpose, also allows switching the volume control keys to Bass and Treble modes. The use of such a solution made it possible not to overload the control panel with keys, and the interface is intuitive to understand.

Each speaker system is two-way – there is a woofer/midrange driver and a tweeter. Rear panels have full-fledged reflex ports, – the design is made with an inner tube.

Judging by the diameter in the photo , – we can expect that the “bass” will be good, – we’ll see.

By the way, each woofer/midrange driver the whole 115 mm! is placed approximately opposite to the end of the bass inverter tube coming out to the back. The speaker cone has a rubber suspension.

The tweeters 25 mm each are silk, which means that there will be no excessive “ringing”, typical for metal tweeters.

There are rubber stands glued on the bottom panel, small though they are, but enough to level out the sliding on the surface, and thus preventing the speaker system bottom part from scratches.

In general, all the cleverness of the construction reminds us that the “SVEN” company used to produce Hi-Fi speakers.

Now a few words about the component base. The integrated amplifier circuitry is built around a TDA7265 chip from ST Microelectronics, which operates in AV class, perhaps the most popular class of budget-priced amplifiers.

This means that at low volumes the sound is expected to be quite clean. Here it’s worth mentioning that in TDA7265 specifications it’s specified output power of 25W per each channel, so there should be nothing wrong with power as well.

Turn on

Immediately after power-up the acoustics are in the standby mode – the red LED indicates that there is power. When the working mode is activated the indicator turns green, highlighting the selected connection channel. Turning on the music and listening. Really, in accordance with expectations the tonal balance is shifted to the lower register, but it “washes” the details a little. But, nevertheless, high frequencies sound distinctly. Of course we cannot speak about the Hi-Fi sound, but, nevertheless, the speakers have their own sonic signature.

The overload capability, of course, could be higher, – when the volume is increased lows lose texture. But then again, the low end is as much as 45 Hz, which is not bad even for a floor-standing Hi-Fi speaker system. That’s why overloading at increased volume of the built-in amplifier is the reverse side of “reserve of lowers”. In addition, there is a separate treble and bass control, which allows you to find the best balance between acceptable sound and distortion.

Don’t forget that it’s not the studio monitors and not the disco audio system. In any case, it does not prevent to estimate the acoustics before buying – no matter how natural the sellers did not yawn at the phrase “I want to listen”.

To summarize

So, judging by the appearance and the circuitry you could expect the speaker system to be bassy, without excessive ringing, the most successful at low volume. This is exactly how the SPS-707s performed. – The lower midrange is more pronounced than the rest of the range, but there is no “gypping.

The acoustic systems are designed in such a way that they can have a wide sphere of application – computer acoustics, music audio system, two-channel cinema set. Another possible application is external TV speakers. SPS-707 are magnetically shielded, so there will be no interference.

It’s not a secret that many TV sets, despite their tempting price, have a lousy sound system and an external speaker system is a must. True, in the latter case you will often need to use an inexpensive DAC audio outputs in modern TV sets are often digital , – but that’s another topic.

In addition, the presence of wireless remote control extends the use of acoustics.

Of course, you won’t be surprised by a remote control in a multimedia speaker system,

But, nevertheless, wired ones are more common. They are justified, in fact, only for use with the computer, and not always – the volume can be perfectly adjusted with the software.

So, SPS-707 is a complete solution, an audio system with a wide range of applications, especially if we take into account its democratic price.
