SVEN MS 3000 speaker system review: Hi-Fi for gamers against the background of a computer..

Tiny’s son came to his dad’s house… It’s just like that, but Tiny’s about to turn 12 and, according to him, he’s an advanced user. If his statement could be translated into American, it meant that his computer speakers were outdated, too small, and, generally speaking, he needed normal sound but not a plastic parody.

Difficult choices

The next weekend my son and I went to the Mitino Radio Market thanks God we live nearby to buy the desired speaker system. I never imagined that my child would have such high demands on sound.

We have been wandering around the market for a long time and I was about to give up hope that we would be able to choose anything at all, all plastic variants of speakers were rejected right away, active acoustics were not satisfied because of background in loudspeakers without any load.

In some models everything was satisfactory, except the design. Other models were happy with the design, but the sound left a lot to be desired. The others were satisfied with both sound and design, but lacked functionality.

At last we found Sven MS 3000. My son was satisfied with everything, while I was embarrassed by the price – for such a great price a decent stereo could be bought. But looking into his shining eyes I made up my mind to buy.

Design

The design, strange as it may seem, suited me and him, a classic! Satellites and subwoofer cabinets made of MDF, cherry woodgrain stylized. With this design the tri-phonic blends in with any interior. The central unit, aka amplifier, is made of matte black plastic with a glossy front panel.

The system is equipped with LED display, which works for hours in standby mode, with backlighting in a pleasant muted reddish color. The central unit can be placed both vertically and horizontally, using it as a stand for a monitor. The satellites have a special attachment on the back for wall mounting. The remote control is easy to hold, intuitive to understand and does not cause any problems in use.

The system found its place in our apartment at once. The satellites were hung on the wall, on each side of the monitor. The central unit was placed beside the monitor, and the subwoofer was placed on the floor diametrically from the system unit.

How it sounds

The first thing I did was to change the acoustic cables. The ones that came with it are thin and not of high quality, they tend to fall out of their sockets and, frankly speaking, are a bit short.

I put a good acoustic cable with 2 mm cross section, and the sound immediately changed for the better. Most likely, the cable included in the delivery set is used to check the system operability. Perhaps, this is the only disadvantage.

Now, directly about the sound. The system pretends to Hi-Fi sound. For this purpose a passive acoustics is used in the triphonics. The two-way satellites are equipped with fabric tweeters. Tone-compensation amplifies the lowest and highest sounds and equalizes the soundstage for the user. Balanced and calibrated cone elasticity provides a fairly flat frequency response over the satellites’ specified frequency range of 150-25000 Hz.

On the back of the speakers is a standard terminal block for speaker wiring and a phaso inverter. Large enough cone of subwoofer cone 165 mm allows to reproduce naturally and evenly within specified low-frequency range of 35 – 150 Hz.

As a result, the sound of the system is natural and soft, with pronounced low frequencies. The upper frequencies are clear and transparent. The speaker system plays practically everything – movies, all kinds of music, computer games.

Particularly vivid sound battle scenes. Loudness compensating system equalizes power of bass and treble. So you do not need full power to perceive the sound fully, the system sounds clear and smooth without distortion at a low volume. No background in the speakers when there is no load, no vibration inside the frame.

How it works

The audio circuit of the system is based on three chips, which are quite popular in the construction of modern multimedia complexes and car audio-video equipment.

The first chip is a four-channel switchable audio processor on a CMOS chip PT2313L from Princeton Technology, which is a preamplifier, tone control, inputs switch, etc.d.

Two more chips TRA3123D2 from Texas Instruments 24 pins, TSSOP package, closed by a heat sink serve as a class D power amplifier. Each such chip is capable to drive two channels with 4 Ohm load up to 25 W per channel at 27 V supply voltage.

One of these chips is responsible for stereo work of satellites and the other one for subwoofer work. According to the declared characteristics the total THD+N Total Nonlinear Distortion + Noise with the load of 4 Ohm and the output power of 10 W does not exceed 0.08%, and signal to noise ratio at maximum volume with THD+N 1% i f = 1 kgc is about 99 dB – this can be considered a decent level for a multimedia amplifier of this class.

Functionality

The system is equipped with FM tuner and LED display. The sound of the radio is quite decent, even with the included antenna. Stations can be “caught” both in automatic and manual mode, there is a function of memorizing radio stations. Information about the operating FM frequency is shown on the LED display. In standby mode, the display shows a 24-hour clock. Alarm clock, unfortunately, no.

For sound adjusting there are treble and bass controls. For listening to audio tracks there are USB and SD sockets. When playing from a USB flash drive or SD card, the system remembers the track when you turn off and, when you turn on, begins playback from the interrupted track. On the front of the central unit is a headphone jack and universal mini-jack input. On the back of the computer input and universal input.

Personal impressions

So, my son and I installed the device. All of his impressions were expressed in one word: class! Mine is a bit more varied.

First. If you take sound from your computer, you should adjust the player and the equalizer of your computer. I looked up reviews of this model on the Internet – one in three report a high-frequency background in the speakers. I want to tell these people – adjust your player!

If there is no background from a flash drive or when listening to the radio, then it’s not the unit, but the source of the sound! I raced this device in all modes – my impressions were only positive, there was no high-frequency background in the speakers!

Second. Bass is really well-colored.

Third. The best sound for computer games! The detail of the playing field is amazing.

Fourth. When watching movies online, the sound scene is great, the dialog is clear, the dynamic and battle scenes amaze you with their realism. The volume is big enough, I can hear a 16m2 room at less than half volume, the sound is clear and the bass doesn’t skip.

My son and I are quite satisfied – he can play and watch video films with his friends comfortably, I can listen to the news in the morning and drink coffee with pleasant music.
