Speaker System 2.0 SVEN STREAM MEGA R: two-zero for me.

When I brought Sven SPS-619 GOLD speakers to my editorial office, I noticed a lot of boxes with Sven speakers at my boss’ place. There were decent sized monitors in this pile. And a crazy idea occurred to me – to compare my favorite Technics with this speaker, especially as their dimensions are equivalent. After all, we music lovers are like that – we choose for a long time, but after the purchase we do not perceive anything new. So it happened to me – I have a stereo from a company that no longer exists, and I don’t even listen to the new stuff. The boss understood me and said: take your pick! I grabbed the first decent-sized box I could find. At home, on closer inspection, it turned out to be the acoustics from Sven, STREAM MEGA R.

HOW IT WORKS

I got lucky! Out of fear, acting on the principle – grab it or they’ll take it away – I grabbed a model made with Bi-amp technology and my Technics has three built in amplifiers: HF, LF and MF. Accordingly, there are three pairs of acoustic wires stretched to the monitors speakers . What is Bi-amp? It is a double amplifier with an active crossover. This scheme used to be used on professional studio active monitors.

The point of bi-amping is not only in separate amplification of high-frequency and low-frequency, but also in the fact that the crossover is before the amplifier and cuts off unnecessary, parasitic frequencies. This unloads the amplifier itself, bandwidth is narrowed and capacitive load is minimized. My Technics has the opposite – three amplifiers drive the signal to the crossover, thus amplifying everything necessary and unnecessary. It means, correspondingly, that Sven active speakers should sound better.

COMPLETE

The speakers are packed in a glossy, white and blue cardboard box. In the crosshair of the blue stripes a reminder of the Finnish origin of the company the inscription Sven. On the front is a huge photo of the speakers themselves, on the front are some brief technical specs

– Total output power 120W 60 x 2

– Frequency range 35 – 27000 Hz

– Diameter of speakers 165 mm woofers and 25 mm tweeters

– Dimensions 255 x 360 x 225 mm

Open it and take a look. In the box, in addition to the speakers themselves, are:

– Manual in several languages, warranty card for 12 months from date of sale.

– Connecting speaker cable to connect active speaker to passive speaker. Length of cable 3 meters.

– Cable 2RCA – 2RCA Tulip – Tulip Stereo , a length of 1.5 meters.

– Mini Jack to 2RCA cable, 1.5 meter long.

– RC PANEL

– Spare fuse like on a Soviet TV .

The remote control has a lithium battery CR2025 3V already inserted, you just need to remove the protective film. Besides remote control, you can control monitors from the active speaker.

DESIGN AND OPERATION

The speakers look very stylish and solid. Wenge color, sleek and elegant at the same time. Speakers covered with black grills. If you remove the grill, underneath is a glossy black laminate, perfectly matching the cones. Sides are made as overlays on the main body, imitating wenge wood. The lines are smooth, with no sharp angles.

Thanks to its solid appearance and black color Sven Stream Mega R will perfectly fit in any interior, except for a child’s room. The system looks more expensive than it is worth – the case is made very qualitatively, creates the illusion of real wood, all seams are done up to the highest level, there is no warping.

The controls are on the front of the active speaker. There are 3 knobs – volume, treble and bass control. The knobs are stylization, t.k. The control is fully electronic, instead of variable resistors we have encoders.

Next is the line input LINE IN , and this is already a serious claim. Exactly the linear, without the preamplifier. It is needed for quick connection of mobile devices such as smartphone, player, recorder, etc.d. Using a cable with a mini Jack connector.

There is also a LED indicator, a headphone output and an infrared remote control signal receiver on the panel.

Now let’s take the remote control. Conveniently shaped remote control, pleasant to the touch thanks to soft-touch coating. All buttons press softly, it weighs 32 grams, battery powered by CR2025, which somewhat reduces the sensitivity of the IR sensor. I will list the buttons and their purpose:

1.ST – BY: standby button

2.RESET: reset the audio settings

3.AUX: button turns on 1 stereo input

4.LINE IN: line in connection

5.PC: power button 2 stereo inputs

6.VOL+: increase volume level

7.VOL-: volume down

8.L/R: buttons to control the balance of the right and left channels

9.MUTE: mute/unmute

10.TREBLE +/-: HF tone level adjustment

11.BASS +/-: Bass level adjustment

Let’s look at the back of the active speaker. It has on/off button. The power cord on this model is not removable, there is a fuse socket nearby. For switching, has two pairs of RCA inputs Tulip , between which you can quickly switch with the remote control.

Audio engineering

For the passive speaker connection, there’s a custom four-pin connector. If you need to put speakers more than three meters away, it is not clear how to get out of this situation.

WHAT’S INTO

The bass inverter is funnel-shaped, with a rear output, about 75mm long. The electronic part consists of two boards, one of which is located on the back removable plate. Two channel LM4766T analog amplifiers are used for both frequency channels. The quiescent current of their output stages is quite high, in absence of signal the radiator gets a little warm, but other than that, pure pluses. The microcircuits are low-noise, have built-in overvoltage and short-circuit protection. Power is 30 watts per channel, in this case per speaker.

Crossover and digital control are on a separate PCB. The crossover is made with four channel TL084 op-amps and uses a 4th order active filter, which gives 24dB/octave! Digital control uses analog signal processor R2A15908SP controlled by an integrated microcontroller.

This speaker system uses the technology of two separate power supply systems on two transformers. For the amplifier, a standard W-shaped transformer with shielding is used. But it is connected not to 220 V network, but to the standby unit that has a small W-shaped transformer, rectifier with integral voltage regulator for power supply of low-power electronics and a relay that supplies 220 V voltage to the powerful transformer by the signal from the remote control. As a result of this design the speakers do not hum in standby mode and in working mode they pump up to the claimed 60W.

As drivers we have two dynamic heads, tweeter and woofer respectively. The woofer has a lacquered paper cone, which is a big plus for high sound quality. Cone diameter with rubber suspension is 155 mm. Cap is tight, standard domed shape. The marking is SVEN 4 Om 60 W.On the back side there is an opening for coil cooling. The tweeter has a silk tweeter. Label is SVEN 6 Om 24 W.

HOW IT SIGHS

Well, the system is assembled, and the sound is fed from a laptop via the line input. For the sake of purity of the experiment on the rear input I hang the 2004 Sony CD-player from the AV-7 system. Let’s start with the notebook.

I should say at once that this system is not suitable for lovers of overcooked bass, but for listening to rock, jazz, blues, classical and popular music it is just what the doctor ordered!

So, rock. When listening to a good quality recording in MP3 format and in CD format the sound is excellent! The solo guitar sounds on 5 points, the attack of a drum kit sounds great, pleases with a clear and resilient bass, the bass guitar stands out clearly in the background, the voice of the soloist sounds without distortion. Particularly good bass and treble sound. To all appearances, this is how the designer intended it to sound.

The midrange sound is quite even and without the common annoying dip in the upper midrange. The high-frequency range has high detail, which provides a good stereo panorama. Thanks to the use of high-quality speakers, the lower range of the middle frequencies sounds free and well developed.

During listening to jazz and blues the sound is comfortable even with a neutral tone control and when equalized the music tones up nicely. Scene detail, sounds just as the sound engineer planned it. There is small pleasure for admirers of extreme low frequencies addition in this system too – there is no specific phasoinverter noise in sounding, but power is lost insignificantly.

The device reaches its full potential when listening to classical music! Orchestra sounds great, you can hear the slightest details, rustles when the bows and musicians fingers are moving. Female vocals do not irritate, sound naturally, without hysterical notes and squeaks, does not hurt your ears at high volume. In general, the impressions are very positive.

All the same listened to with the transport from Sony. The sound has only improved, there is more detail. But it’s also due to the uncompressed recording format.

Advantages:

– Very decent sound.

– No passive crossover, instead of an active one Bi-amp system .

– Possibility to connect three signal sources.

– Mids and equal frequency response in all areas of sound.

– No parasitic noises tapping, etc.d. at adjustments

– Correct implementation of the power supply system.

– Design, color choice.

– Decent thickness of the enclosure walls.

– Presence of Standby mode and remote control.

Disadvantages:

– Use of rare connectors to connect the passive speaker.

– Faint background noise, felt in complete silence from transformer crosstalk.

– Noticeable clicks when turning on/off

CONCLUSIONS

I should say at once that since 2004 the multimedia class has made a huge step forward and came very close to the sound, previously available only in Hi-Fi-class devices. But it is different price category – for the same Technics for these money I would buy only a CD player, and that one-chamber one!!
