The new Alpha 9 II builds on the impressive legacy of the original Alpha 9 by maintaining stunning performance, including continuous blackout-free shooting at up to 20 fps with tracking AF and auto-exposure with 60 AF/AE calculations per second. At the same time, the camera offers new features implemented based on direct requests from professionals. Innovations include significantly enhanced connectivity and file transfer capabilities, continuous shooting at up to 10 fps with a mechanical shutter, improved autofocus performance with new optimized algorithms, design changes for improved reliability and handling, and more.

“The opinion of our consumers is absolutely crucial for the company – we always listen to them,” says Andrey Kurganov, Head of Marketing of Photo and Video Equipment at Sony Electronics in America and the CIS. “The Alpha 9 II is a direct result of the feedback received from sports and news photographers as well as agency photographers since the original Alpha 9. We’ve expanded connectivity options and networking capabilities that radically improve workflow, while making small but important changes to the design, interface and processing power that are important to the user experience. Our highly versatile E lens mount system, currently available with 55 original lenses including the 600mm and 400mm Super Telephoto G-Series Master™ lenses, makes the new camera an unparalleled tool for professionals in any field.”

A new level of built-in communication in the professional workflow

The Alpha 9 II has a built-in 1000BASE-T Ethernet terminal providing gigabit data streams for fast, stable file transfers. In addition, data transfer using SSL or TLS cryptographic protocols is supported

(FTPS standards are supported to increase data security and improve remote computer control tethering performance: Shutter lag time and screen lag time in live view mode when using the PC application &lsquo Remote Camera Tool’iv. The performance of the built-in wireless LAN functions has also been improved by adding a stable and fast 5 GHz band IEEE 802.11ac v band, in addition to the 2.4 GHz band available in the Alpha 9. All IEEE 802 802 standards are supported.11a/b/g/n/ac.

Designed to increase the speed of news agency work streams, the Alpha 9 II has a new Voice Memo feature which allows voice information to be added to image files in the form of voice memos which can be played back while viewing images. Voice messages can also be included in image files sent to the editor, giving him or her important information for efficient editing. Alternatively, the photographer on location can use the software &lsquo Transfer & Tagging add-on’ as part of the Imaging Edge™ app and transfer images to your mobile device along with voice tags that will be automatically converted to text and added to JPEG images as IPTC metadata. All of this can be done automatically or manually at the photographer’s choice.

By combining wireless voice/image transmission and automatic voice-to-text conversion with the ability to automatically transfer images with attached voice messages via FTP, you can shoot and transfer results to FTP even without a smartphone. FTP settings contained in the app can also be transferred to the camera via Bluetooth®, allowing for faster workflow.

Platinum standard for fast and efficient autofocus

The new Alpha 9 II uses the same famous 24.2-megapixel Exmor RS™ full frame 35mm CMOS sensor with built-in memory as the original Alpha 9 to bring you the same unbeatable speed and outstanding image quality. The new model can shoot continuously and completely silently at 20 fps up to 361 JPEG images or up to 239 RAW images without darkening the viewfinder, allowing the photographer to keep track of the subject and the action as you shoot. For those situations where a mechanical shutter is desired or needed, the new Alpha 9 II has been upgraded to shoot at up to 10 fps, about 2x faster than the Alpha 9.

This camera is capable of simultaneously executing AF/AE calculations up to 60 times per second, thanks to newly optimized autofocus algorithms which achieve a markedly higher precision and efficiency of focusing and are guaranteed to capture even the erratic movements of a subject, typical of sports shooting, with a high degree of precision. For sports shooting, it’s also helpful that the camera now features a flicker-free shooting mode, which automatically detects and corrects flicker from fluorescent lights or other artificial lighting to give you the best possible image quality.

The new Alpha 9 II’s redesigned focus system includes 693 phase-assist AF points on the focal plane, which

Cover approximately 93% of the image area, as well as 425 contrast AF points. This fast hybrid autofocus system provides extremely fast and accurate focus, ensuring accurate capture of fast-moving subjects. Additional focusing options include real eye AF with right/left eye selection, real eye AF for animals updated with new algorithm , real eye AF for moviesxxv, real time tracking, focus frame color selection, touch focus point control on the touch panel when using the viewfinder, and more. The autofocus system is capable of continuously tracking the subject even in continuous shooting mode and when the aperture is closed beyond F16, providing even greater clarity for shots that require quite slow shutter speeds.
