Cyber-shot RX10 – representative of the next offshoot of the older compact class. It is a kind of photographic Olympus, a realm of boundless imagination, a realm of incredible breakthrough technologies and a realm of pure ideas.

Over the years, completely different cameras were born here, some of which, like Prometheus, came down to the people, bringing progress, being reborn into new, quite mundane machines. There’s no direct competitor for obvious reasons, but the RX10 does have one. The Olympus Stylus 1.
Both cameras have in common a zoom lens with constant aperture of F2.8. The Sony’s is shorter, but it has a much larger sensor, 1 inch versus 1/1.7 inch. For a significant increase in image quality, however, you have to pay almost twice the price.
The RX10’s sensor capabilities are further enhanced by a next-generation Bionz X processor with more efficient image-processing algorithms. The Sony RX10 is incredibly fast, but will appeal more to videographers than reporters. For them, there is a 1080@60p recording mode with manual control and the ability to connect an external microphone. Combined with outstanding optics, this kind of functionality seems especially appealing. The top-of-the-line features include a flip-down display and OLED viewfinder.
The format of the RX100 is not small at all. There’s even room for a separate monochrome LCD screen, which, like in DSLR cameras, displays key shooting data. The body is made of metal and protected from dust and moisture.
That’s all fine, but the question remains: is a great unit, but with built-in optics, worth the asking price? The only problem in the selection of alternatives is the lens: you just can’t find it in interchangeable format. Everything else for the same or even less money can be found in “system” cameras.
