Continuing the highly successful Cyber-shot RX series, developers have achieved an incredible concentration of technology per cubic centimeter. The DSC-RX100 III is not just the “successor” to all its family members, it’s a groundbreaking new device and a quantum leap in its evolution.

Development has affected all major components of the camera. First of all, the zoom has changed. It’s a bit shorter, but it has a wider angle and, most importantly, a higher aperture ratio. The data system is largely borrowed from the latest A7S system camera.
It has significantly improved image quality and the video mode has actually reached a professional level. There is support for recording in XAVC S format. Data stream at the same time is 50 Mbps with the ability to save a duplicate clip in AVCHD or MP4 with 720p resolution. Like the A7S, the signal for video recording comes from the entire sensor, not individual sensor groups.
Processor Bionz X equipped with algorithms to correct optical distortions in images. Not only can chromatic aberration and vignetting be processed, but the negative effects of diffraction are eliminated with small apertures.
Besides the adjustable tilt RGBW display the designers managed to build a retractable electronic viewfinder with a 1440K-dot OLED matrix into the body. Since it can be completely retracted into the housing, the camera dimensions remain practically the same, but the eyepiece is quite large.
The camera is both functionally and operationally adapted to complex shooting with a variety of manual settings. There are a pair of click wheels, one of which is mounted on the lens, and two customizable function keys.
The capabilities of the built-in pop-up flash can be expanded by using an external blitz, for which there is a hot shoe. The same slot, thanks to the comb of multifunctional interface contacts in it, you can connect other accessories – such as a controlled zoom microphone or even XLR interface unit.
The camera looks stylish and neat. There are no special design frills, but the rich guts fully compensate for the external modesty.
This mini review provides useful information about the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III compact camera. However, I would like to know more about its low-light performance and image stabilization capabilities. Can anyone share their experience with these features?
