First look at Ricoh GR III compact camera

Ricoh recently announced the development of the third model in its popular GR line of compact cameras. Replacing its predecessors, the GR III will get an updated sensor and redesigned lens. A prototype of the new camera is currently on display at the companyā€™s booth at Photokina 2018

It is known that the GR III will feature a new 24MP APS-C sensor, which will be a marked improvement over the older 16MP sensor used in the GR and GR II. New sensor brings phase detection autofocus and in-camera stabilization IBIS .

The GR IIIā€™s magnesium-alloy body looks indistinguishable from its predecessors. The focal length of the lens also remains unchanged at 28mm Eq.35mm , but its optical scheme has been redesigned. New lens has six elements in four groups, including two aspherical elements. The GR and GR II lens consisted of seven elements in five groups, including also two aspherical elements.

The only known improvement from the change of optical scheme was the reduction of the minimum focusing distance to 6 cm in macro mode and 10 cm in normal shooting mode. The full potential of the new lens can only be assessed once the camera is released. At least the old lens on the GR and GR II let you take sharp, detailed pictures.

The video shooting function in the GR III has been moved from the mode dial to a separate button on the side of the body. This button can also be configured to activate Wi-Fi mode. Also notice the absence of the mechanical flash switch, which was in this position on the GR and GR II, indicating that the built-in flash on the GR III will be absent.

The top panel has not undergone significant changes. It still features a hot shoe, on/off button, function dial in the body ledge, shutter button, and PASM mode dial with three custom settings, which looks not as busy as the GR and GR II.

On the back of the camera is an LCD screen that looks slightly larger than previous models. But the screen hasnā€™t really changed diagonally, just the aspect ratio, which is now 3:2 instead of 4:3 as it was before. The main change is that the new screen now supports touch controls. Also missing from the rear are the AE/AFL/ AF-C switch and the +/- lever from the upper right corner. However, the GR III has a control dial around the 4-way function selection panel and, judging by the labeling, you can see that the top ā€œADJā€ dial can be used to control exposure compensation.

The RICOH GR III is expected to be released in early 2019.
