New Sony RX1R II with a full-frame 42.4MP sensor, improved focusing and the world’s first customizable optical low-pass filter. Sony’s latest super compact camera features a full-frame backlit sensor, 35mm ZEISS lens
®
Sonnar T* F2, fast autofocus, a folding XGA OLED viewfinder, and the world’s first customizable optical low-pass filter[i] with bracketing capability. Sony expands its famous Cyber-shot RX line of compact cameras by introducing the full-frame RX1R II model DSC-RX1RM2 .
Joining the RX1 and RX1R, the first in a family of the world’s smallest full-frame cameras, the new RX1R II delivers image quality never before seen in a Sony compact camera. The combination of a high-resolution 42.4 megapixel sensor and the high-aperture F2 ZEISS Sonnar T* 35 mm fixed focal length lens is largely responsible for this, as is the fine-tuning of lens and sensor to optimize collaboration.
In addition, the new model has a 30% improvement in AF response compared to the original RX1, which has won many awards. The RX1R II is equipped with the world’s first customisable optical low-pass filter that can be set to “off”, “standard” or “high” depending on user preference, and also accepts a bracketing mode. The new camera features a handy folding XGA OLED eye-level viewfinder, which is designed so that changes in overall size of the camera compared to previous models were minimal.
Unparalleled image quality in the palm of your hand
The new RX1R II uses a 35mm Exmor R-type full frame CMOS sensor® Backlit and with an effective resolution of approximately 42.4 megapixels combined with the powerful BIONZ X processor to achieve the highest levels of image resolution and sensitivity ISO 100-25600, expandable to 50 – 102400[ii] with a wide dynamic range. Reverse-illuminated sensor structure, higher circuitry integration and copper metallization provide faster data transfer speeds and outputs approximately 3.5x faster than the original RX1R.
The bright 35 mm ZEISS Sonnar T* F2 lens was specifically designed for this sensor to ensure that all images shot with this camera are impressively sharp from the center of the frame to the corners. This lens is equipped with a unique macro ring that allows you to focus on objects as close as 14cm from the front surface of the lens, and a 9-blade iris that provides smooth, even background defocusing for the most commonly used apertures.
Another unique advantage of the new camera is its fixed lens design, which allows for precise positioning of the lens and sensor in relation to each other to take full advantage of the extremely high resolution of the sensor.
The closer the components are to each other, the wider the angle at which light can pass through the lens and directly onto the sensor to create detailed, high-resolution images. In addition, unlike the focal plane shutter common to interchangeable lens cameras, the RX1R II uses a shutter built into the lens, making 1/2000 sec flash sync speeds possible. and significantly reduces the overall size of the body.
The new RX1R II also supports uncompressed 14-bit RAW recording to take full advantage of the sensor’s wide dynamic range, while still keeping compression capabilities.
Fast autofocus to catch the decisive moment
The RX1R II is the first of Sony’s RX series of compact cameras to feature fast hybrid autofocus. The camera’s sensor features 399 phase-assisted AF points on the focal plane that cover approximately 45% of the image area, the world’s largest AF coverage of a full frame sensori, and work together with 25 contrast AF zones to make the autofocus response about 30% faster than in the original model.
In addition, this camera uses an advanced motion prediction algorithm that provides superior performance when tracking a moving subject and allows for the optional AF-C mode, which tracks the subject accurately after focusing.
Other enhancements to the new model’s focusing system include several AF area settings, including “Wide” “Center” and “Adjustable Spot” as well as “Eye AF” and “Tracking AF” functions.
World’s first customizable optical low-pass filter
For the first time for a digital camera, the RX1R II is equipped with an adjustable optical low-pass filter that enables the user to manually adjust the balance between image resolution and the occurrence of moiré or color artifacts depending on the subject.
Three possible LF filter settings[iii] include “Disabled” which creates the effect of no LF filter and is designed for when image resolution is a priority “Standard” which preserves resolution while eliminating moiré and color artifacts, and “High” which is focused on suppressing moiré and artifacts.
This unique feature lets photographers achieve the resolution and image quality they want when there’s a moire-inducing high spatial frequency object in the frame, essentially combining two cameras in one body – with and without a low-pass filter. Bracketing is also possible by changing the low pass filter setting, allowing you to compare the results of different settings.
New folding XGA OLED viewfinder
New to the RX1 series is the RX1R II’s built-in XGA OLED Tru-Finder[iv], which pops up and folds down with a simple press. The viewfinder has ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating and four glass elements, including two aspherical lenses, which provide 0.74x[v] magnification and clear, distortion-free visibility throughout the frame.
Variable angle screen, Full HD video and more
New camera features 3.WhiteMagic™ LCD screen with 1.2 million pixels and up to 109 degrees up and 41 degrees down to shoot at multiple angles from a variety of positions.
In movies, the advanced sensor and processor of this camera produce extremely detailed images with low noise. Utilizing universal format XAVC S[vi], this camera is capable of recording in Full HD 1920×1080 at 60p, 30p or 24p.
The new RX1R II is Wi-Fi® and NFC ready, and is fully compatible with the Sony PlayMemories Mobile™ app for Android™ and iOS platforms, as well as Sony’s growing collection of PlayMemories Camera Apps™.
A new version of the popular “Smart Remote Control”[vii] will be released soon via PlayMemories Camera Apps™. This app provides remote control of shooting with a smartphone, includes infinite shutter speed and continuous shooting functions, upgraded for the new camera. Learn more here sony.net/pmca
The Sony RX1R II camera will be on sale in America at the end of November – beginning of December.

Wow, the Sony RX1R II compact camera sounds impressive with its full frame and high-resolution 42.4 megapixel sensor. The improved focus is definitely a plus, but I’m curious about the “world’s first optical low-pass filter.” How does this feature enhance image quality and what are its benefits compared to traditional filters?
