Your fridge goes into shutdown mode "Vacation"

If your fridge is left off, even if thereā€™s no food inside, it can be really hard to get that musty, unpleasant smell out of it later. Besides, as a rule, you can never manage to eat up all the stock completely: there will definitely be some frozen packages in the freezer, sauces and different jars in the fridge compartment.

If the refrigerator also wants to go on ā€œvacationā€

Refrigerators

Many mid-range and top-range fridges have a special Holiday function that allows you to set the refrigerator at a constant operating temperature of around +15Ā°C, thus minimising your energy consumption.

This mode, as its name suggests, is recommended to activate in case of long absences, e.g. vacation or vacations, when there is almost no food left in the fridge.

If your fridge has one compressor and one cooling circuit, you canā€™t turn off the freezer completely.

If the design provides for the presence of 2 compressors or 2 independent cooling circuits with only one compressor, the freezing chamber can and should be! to switch off if you are going to be away for a long time.

By the way, some manufacturersā€™ fridges have two variants of switching over to ā€œVacationā€ mode ā€“ when normal operation mode of the freezing chamber is kept and when it is switched off completely.

Donā€™t worry if your fridge is one of the most simple and economical appliances. It is not possible to turn off either of the chambers at all, but in any case, preparing for long absences, set the thermostat to its minimum setting and leave only the bare minimum of food inside.

Checking climate class

In the documentation of each fridge there is a notation of the so-called climatic class of the device. This specifies the range of ambient temperatures at which the manufacturer guarantees normal, trouble-free operation of their fridge-freezer. The following climatic classes:

  • N ā€“ normal ambient temperature from +16 to +32 Ā°C
  • SN ā€“ subnormal ambient temperature between +10 and +32Ā°C
  • ST is subtropical ambient temperature between +18 and +38 Ā°C
  • T ā€“ tropical ambient temperature +18 to +43 Ā°C .

The most common markings on refrigerators sold in American stores are SN and ST. Recently, units with combined N-ST or SN-ST labels are also common. This is due to the fact that in recent years, summer temperatures in some rooms exceed +32 ĀŗC.

For you with or without ice?

Another useful function of the refrigerator, which is extremely relevant in the summertime, is the preparation of food ice.

You can, of course, just pour water into a special tray and put it in the freezer for a few hours. But it is much nicer to take advantage of the built-in dispenser, which is increasingly becoming an indispensable attribute of medium- and high-end refrigerators, especially the so-called Side-by-Side refrigerators.

The dispenser consists of an ice maker and a dispenser for filling the container with ice or chilled water. The dispenser usually has its own multi-functional display, where either one sensor key corresponds to each mode or the modes are switched by successive pressing of a single key.

Dispenser usually has three operating modes: chilled water, ice chips or ice cubes. Each dispenser has its own performance, which is indicated in the technical documentation for the refrigerator.

What are the possible reasons behind your fridge going into shutdown mode ā€œVacationā€? Is it a feature that can be manually activated or does it happen automatically? Are there any benefits or drawbacks to this mode, such as energy saving or potential food spoilage? How can one reactivate the fridge once itā€™s in vacation mode?

Has anyone ever experienced the shutdown mode ā€œVacationā€ on their fridge? Iā€™m wondering what triggers this mode and how long it lasts? Is it a common feature among fridges or specific to certain brands? Any insights or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

What does ā€œshutdown modeā€ exactly mean? Does it turn off completely or just stop cooling? Also, how does the ā€œVacationā€ setting affect the fridgeā€™s functionality?

ā€œShutdown modeā€ typically refers to a state in which a device or appliance is completely turned off. In the context of a fridge, it means that the cooling system is deactivated, and the appliance is unplugged from power. This mode often implies that the fridge is not functioning at all and can be used during extended periods of non-use or when cleaning/maintenance is required.

On the other hand, the ā€œVacationā€ setting on a fridge is designed to optimize energy efficiency while the owner is away for a shorter period, such as a vacation. It typically reduces the fridgeā€™s cooling operation, allowing it to use less energy while maintaining a temperature that prevents food spoilage. The exact functionality may vary depending on the fridge model, but generally, the ā€œVacationā€ setting aims to minimize energy consumption without compromising the preservation of perishable items.

Shutdown mode in a refrigerator means that the cooling system is turned off completely, resulting in no cooling or freezing happening. It essentially puts the fridge into a standby mode where it consumes minimal energy. The Vacation setting on a fridge is designed to optimize energy usage when you are away for an extended period. It typically adjusts the temperature to a slightly warmer setting to reduce energy consumption while still keeping food fresh. So, in essence, the Vacation setting affects the fridgeā€™s functionality by adjusting the temperature to conserve energy during your absence.
