The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX77 compact camera is one of the best in its class

The FX line of cameras has a special place in Panasonic’s lineup. Technically, the cameras, too expensive for budget segment, are inferior in power, quality and abilities to premium LX series and are inferior in their universality to branded ultrazooms of FZ series. In any other case we would face a mediocre mid-range camera, but Panasonic does it in a completely different way. The all-around Lumix DMC-FX77, on the other hand, is one of the best compact cameras.

Because Panasonic’s “middle” means “center” – and this “center” camera incorporates the latest Panasonic technological solutions with some unique features.

The FX77’s unique features include the size of its body only 21mm thick at 140g and the size of its display.

The screen with a diagonal of 3,5 inches occupies completely the back panel of the camera, from the buttons there are only the levers to switch on and zoom, as well as the shutter and video recording, collected on the top edge of the device.

As you can easily guess, all other operations are done with your fingers on the responsive touchscreen. At the same time, the presses activate the whole algorithms of the smart electronics. In the simplest case the camera focuses on the indicated object and takes a picture or activates the tracking system.

But that’s not all. Not only can the electronics take the picture, but they can also activate the tracking system when instructed to do so. Or determine the subject and scene conditions and select the appropriate scene mode according to the subject indicated by the photographer.

The developers, in a slightly postmodern fashion, even invented a fun idea – to make the interactive screen also interactive. In the sense that the user can independently determine the location of the virtual controls.

On-screen buttons and other tools, unlike analog, physical ones, are easy to drag to more convenient locations. One drawback – the screen resolution: 230 thousand. pixels is five times less than I’d like to see on a three and a half inch screen.

The only drawback of the system only in the low resolution of the huge screen: 230 thousand. Five times fewer dots than you want to see on three and a half inches.

The mentioned best Panasonic solutions are first of all successful fast lens with focal length range of 24-120 mm and minimal aperture value of f/2,5 on the short end.

The optics, on the one hand, allows you to solve a variety of photographic tasks without worrying about quality, as in the case with the ultrason on the other hand – allows a wide range of depth of field control and better to cope with shooting in low light.

The third side is, as usual, the very effective Mega O stabilization system. I. S., in the video mode, complemented by a new digital technology to suppress vibration Active Mode corrects the “walking” camera, according to promises of the developers, even when shooting in motion .

The camera is equipped with a fast 12-megapixel CCD sensor and very fast electronics, which allowed to work with sensitivities up to 6400 ISO, recording 3.7 full-size frames per second in continuous mode and, of course, saving Full HD movies.

Video with a frame size of 1920×1080 pixels is written in the advanced AVCHD format 60 fps with interlaced scanning from a “real” stream of 30 fps . And the clever automatic iA extends to still images: stabilization, tracking, face and scene detection turn even complete beginners into professional operators – at least as far as shooting techniques are concerned.

A variety of filters and effects, including a few “hot new products” like “virtual makeup” to enhance portraits, are ready to help with creativity both when creating clips and recording still images.

All these technological wonders for an experienced photographer, of course, will not replace reliability and accuracy of manual control, for example, advanced Lumix LX5. And for an amateur photographer they are just right and certainly will not limit you in anything.

Add to this the advanced functional in a part of video, good fast lens, exclusively compact sizes and fashionable and yes and convenient! interface – and you will understand why Panasonic “average” models can be much more attractive than other older ones.
