The legendary KEF Reference

KEF’s Reference Series has always been revered for its unparalleled reproduction of recorded sound. For its excellence. And after three decades of continuous development and innovation the name of the series has established itself as a criterion for high class loudspeaker engineering.

KEF

KEF has developed the computerized Total System Design program to build the world’s finest reference speaker. KEF engineers pioneered this powerful analytical system by matching loudspeaker pairs to within half a decibel. Because such a precise pairing of speakers ensures perfect stereo sound reproduction, they are instantly recognized for their exceptional acoustic fidelity. And so the name Reference was born.

A class above

With five models: two three-way floor-standing speakers, a powerful three-way floorstander, a three-way center channel, and an astounding 1,000-watt subwoofer, The Reference Series combines the signature high fidelity reproduction with the versatility of a complete multi-channel system.

The heart of The Reference Series is a stunning new generation of perhaps the greatest innovation in modern speaker history – KEF’s point source sound, the Uni-Q midrange/high frequency driver. State-of-the-art 25mm 1in ventilated aluminum dome tweeter is located precisely in the acoustic center of a sophisticated 125mm 5in midrange driver array. The two drive units form a single sound source to fill the space equally with flawless, natural sound, equally perceptible from any listening position.

Center channel

The powerful new 165mm 6.5″ bass driver, designed by KEF to complement the latest Uni-Q point source, is just as in class. Intelligent design and painstaking attention to detail delivers high-quality bass sound in harmony with the immaculate tweeter and midrange response of the Uni-Q driver array.

The 1000 watt subwoofer has two 500 watt Class D amplifiers, each driving a 228mm 9in long-throw, ultra-low distortion bass driver. KEF’s ingenious force compensation technology enables the drivers to operate more efficiently and reproduce bass effects noticeably better. If you haven’t already encountered a truly great subwoofer, you’ll be amazed at how much of an impact it can make on your viewing and listening enjoyment.

KEF

Whether it’s a conventional loudspeaker or a multi-channel home theater set, the Reference sound is so realistic the listener can feel totally present. Incredible special effects from the opening credits to the last frame. Breathtaking dynamics. Unparalleled musicality, from overture to coda. And a level of fidelity that reveals the finest details you’ve never noticed before, even on your favourite recordings. Easy to live with because they are undemanding in terms of placement and, thanks to innovative flexible phase-verter technology, easily and precisely adapted to your specific listening area.

Total attention to detail

Each Reference Series loudspeaker exudes the kind of quality one expects from equipment handcrafted by KEF craftsmen in Maidstone, Kent. Designed using finite element analysis to determine the ideal external shape and internal stiffener geometry, the meticulously crafted cabinets feature a luxurious glossy finish in deep black piano or perfectly paired natural veneers, matched with a unique front panel specially designed to eliminate anomalies caused by sound wave diffraction.

The Reference 1 custom floorstands offer the same design aesthetics and attention to detail as the speakers themselves. Carefully designed plinths and spikes provide the same stability as a floorstanding loudspeaker, preventing any residual cabinet vibrations from being transmitted across the listening room floor.

KEF’s obsession with absolute quality has never disappeared, nor has the craftsmanship. Created the freshest and most modern style possible, characteristic of every generation of the company’s products. As before, for serious audiophiles looking for the perfect movie or music soundtrack, there is one name that continues to rise above the rest.

Kent Engineering and Foundry Special Versions

When visionary and creative electrical engineer Raymond Cook began working to improve the reproduction of recorded sound in 1961, he set up his first research lab on the banks of the River Medway in the south, in what is known as the Garden of England, in a wartime Nissen barracks formerly occupied by Kent Engineering and Foundry. Hence the name: KEF.

To celebrate half a century of continuous innovation and the role the legendary Reference series has played over the past 30 years in shaping KEF’s reputation among serious audiophiles, we have prepared two bespoke versions of the latest models.
