Test of Vincent SV-129

Vincent SV-129 is one of the best “budget” amplifiers on the American market of hi-fi components. We recommend to choose the speakers to match it responsibly.

FEATURES

The German company Vincent for thirteen years has made impressive progress: by 2008 the firm has developed several lines of equipment for stereo and home theater, set up the production of speakers, cables and AV-mebli. What sets the company apart is that in addition to high-end products under the Vincent brand, they also come in low-end models that are affordable to just about every music lover.

One of such affordable products is the SV-129 integrated amplifier, which is a part of a wide range of PowerLine products. The case of the amplifier is made entirely of aluminum, with a thick front panel in front – nothing says anything about the initial status of the unit. Numerous controls are placed on the front: tone-block controls in the treble/frequency ranges, balance control, volume knobs and source selection. There are two other little buttons: one turns off the tone-block circuit, and the other activates the tape loop.

On the amplifier’s rear panel there are five line inputs with RCA connectors, including tape recorder, and two line outputs: one for the tape recorder and the other for the preamp.

Note that SV-129 has no phono stage input, though in the device of this class it will hardly be in demand.

Inside the unit the space is divided by a big radiator into two sections: one of them accommodates the power supply with a rather large toroidal transformer, while the other section accommodates the circuitry of the amplifier producing 50 W of power for two channels with an 8-ohm load.

The Vincent SV-129 integrated amplifier is available in two colors: silver and black.

The amplifier comes with a very compact remote control with a minimal set of functions: with three buttons the user can control the volume and activate the mute mode.

SOUND

The amplifier pleased with the even tonal balance of sound. But its main advantage is the high “speed” of sound in the MF/HF region, to get such clear time transitions for such money is a great fortune. The mids are clear in a neutral/cool manner with natural basic timbre for all instruments and vocals. Dynamically, the superiority is given to the high-frequency range: the treble is reproduced with excellent articulation, well elaborated cymbal loops. Very nice sounding jazz compositions with an abundance of brass and high frequency percussion – the sound has an airiness, lightness, the music conveys a cheerful spring mood to the listener. Compared to the treble, the midrange timbres are a little easier and less accentuated. The bass has less details and average articulation, but the control is still good and the bass level is still good.

The amplifier opens the music scene well along the azimuth, the images of the frontal plane are clearly separated and even on the edges the detail of the picture drops a little. The stage of SV-129 is somewhat limited in depth, but to its credit this practically does not affect its transparency: the volume is reduced, but not the contrast.

As a source Yamaha CD-S2000 CD-player was used. Amplifier barely distorts the turntable’s response. Amplifier roll-off in the bass begins at 50-60 Hz -0 … .3dB at 20Hz , in the tweeter at 10-11kHz -0.0.1dB at 20kHz , with a source flatness of +0/-0.3 dB. The THD of the amplifier at 1kHz does not exceed 0.012%, source THD 0.008% . This amplifier raises all harmonics proportionally and marginally, except for the fourth, which it emits more than the others, so that it compares with the 3rd THD component in the output signal. Harmonics above 4th experience virtually no change throughout the entire sound range.
