Test of Jamo E770 speaker system

E770 is a representative of the updated E-series company Jamo. The Danes delight us with something unconventional almost every year, be it an original design idea or a fresh technical approach to the production of a particular acoustic assembly.

TEST RESULTS

CONSTRUCTION FEATURES: The new models do not disappoint this time. E770 speakers have somewhat unusual appearance, which combines classic forms with ultramodern technological solutions. Rectangular shape at first sight is not so simple. If you look closely, the front and top panels are slightly tilted back and go against the back panel at a two-degree angle.

This way the Danish engineers combat the intracasing ‘standing waves’. The case itself is made of durable MDF panels 19mm thick. The inside of the enclosure is reinforced by additional cable ties. The exterior of the cabinet is veneered in black ash, pale or dark applewood. The speakers are mounted on plastic feet, which have built-in places for steel studs. Speakers and top of the speakers are covered by a single L-shaped grill, covered with acoustically transparent fabric.

The E770 doesn’t look as “boring” as most conventional speakers. A patch panel with two plastic-filled universal terminals and a large bass port with a ribbed sleeve to reduce airflow turbulence goes along with a 165mm woofer equipped with a fiberglass filament membrane. But the most ingenious element of this speaker is the metal chassis, common to both the tweeter and the midrange driver.

The midrange is made using woofer technology with the same 165mm woven fiberglass diaphragm. The tweeter is made more cleverly, it is made on DTT technology Decoupled Tweeter Technology , the essence of which is the physical separation of the tweeter and the rest of the cabinet. The chassis is attached to the cabinet with elastic rubber mounts, which reduce the effect of cabinet vibration on the speakers.

Additionally, a rubber gasket is put between the chassis and the tweeter, which further protects the “squeaker” from extraneous mechanical vibrations. tweeter E770 is equipped with a soft dome membrane and placed in a special acoustic environment: a disk-shaped horn, in which the tweeter is placed, has a grooved surface with recesses in the form of concentric rings.

AUDIO QUALITY IN STEREO mode: The E770 offers a smooth, tonal balance close to neutral. Deep bass is noteworthy

of the speakers, the sensitivity decay begins only at 40 Hz. The bass is reproduced clearly and the bass control is not lost even at higher volume levels.

After the plucking of the strings of a double bass is quite audible. But there is almost always a sense of understatement. Probably because of very calm disposition of speakers the bass is delivered though very detailed, but somehow aloof. The E770’s sound lacks a truly unrestrained drive.

Good microdynamics and a decent dynamic range accompany the sound of Danish in the middle and high frequencies, but a cold analytical sound is present. Lack of emotionality is noticeable on expressive vocals. But in terms of voice overtones and instrument timbres the E770 almost has no complaints. The only thing is that the top middle sometimes shows harsh notes on the forte.

The scene, built by “Danes”, is not striking in scale and resolution, but it is drawn very accurately and precisely. The middle part is a little bit prominent and forward. Not a bad localization of objects is retained even in large ensembles, which allows the speakers to create a panorama of sound in symphonic works without too much trouble.

PRICE: $899.

SUMMARY

AVAILABILITIES: smooth, clear sound accurate stage.

Disadvantages: the coldness of sound in the whole range.

CONCLUSIONS: on the whole the E770 has a quite universal sound, although the lack of warmth and feeling will not please everyone. The speakers probably have no genre preferences. But they manage to do a little worse for compositions in which the dynamics of the sound is important.
