Test of JAMO C 807 speaker system

Article content

The JAMO C807 offers a neutral and natural sound, handling musical detail with equal precision in all sound ranges. C807 – not the most dynamic speakers in its class, but their sound distinguishes very high comfort.

The C807 models from the Danish company JAMO are part of the top line C80 Concert . Producing a large number of series and constantly changing lineup, Danes pay a lot of attention to the visual appearance of speakers, C807 – no exception, the speakers have curved sides and top, a special design touch – two grills: one covers the top of the facade, the other – the bottom.

The C807 cabinet is made of thick MDF sheets and is divided into several sections equipped with reflex ports of different diameters. In the bottom box works a 180mm bass driver, which covers a frequency range up to 150 Hz, in the upper compartment is a 180mm midwoofer, which works from down to 2 kHz, MF/HF frequency. Above this frequency, the 25-mm squeaker takes the baton. Ports on the rear panel are adjacent to the terminal block, which supports two-cable connection the block is made in one module with the lower FI port .

The C807 uses the latest JAMO speakers. Tweeter, equipped with a silk dome with special impregnation, made by DTT technology Decoupled Tweeter Technology , the essence of which is a special mechanical separation of the tweeter chassis and the wooden cabinet. The chassis is attached to the case with elastic rubber mounts, which reduce the effects of case vibration on the speakers. The tweeter dome is enclosed in a WaveGuide acoustic enclosure that controls tweeter dispersion. Additional features of the squeaker are the vented magnet system with rear damping chamber. The voice coil frame is made of aluminum for better heat dissipation, and the coil is wound with aluminum wire with copper overlay.

MF/HF drivers have proprietary HCC Hard Conical Cone diaphragms. HCC diaphragms are constructed of three layers: the inner diaphragm layer is made of “classic” paper, the outer layers are woven from fiberglass. Open speaker baskets are made of magnesium, their design does not impede the free flow of air, thus improving the cooling of the motor. Another feature of the C80 Series midrange/midrange drivers is the Active Impedance Control AIC technology, which improves the linearity of the driver impedance in the midrange and low-end, and at the same time reduces sound distortion. JAMO engineers put another coil inside the main voice coil, connected in the “other direction. As the speaker operates, the coils move in different directions, partially compensating for overall inductance changes, thereby reducing the distortion of the original signal.

The C807 crossover is fitted with low-pass filters mostly 2nd order , bringing the lowest phase distortion to the sound.

The speakers are available in two finishes: black ash and dark applewood.

Sound

The manner of sound of the C807 is defined by a neutral midrange with correct transfer of time transitions and clear timbre structure. The midrange is underpinned by a clear and deep-drawn bass foundation that is textured, but a little dry and soft on the attack at amplitude pulses. Top is light, smoothly coupled to the middle, no less detailed and accentuated. Clarity of the overtones is reduced slightly only in the last octave. Particularly great attention is paid to the timbres of human voices, vocal parts are conveyed with excellent articulation.

JAMO speakers move the stage away from the listener, but this slight detachment from the musical picture practically does not affect the favorable impression. Because of the good localization the images get realistic size and precise contours, the backgrounds of the sound field are clearly visible.

On the whole, unobtrusive, but detailed presentation of the musical material with an emotional presentation of vocals and “live” instruments is just to be liked, C807 can be listened to for hours without any shadow of weariness.

Price: 59 600 Dollars.

Measurements

Impedance C807 drops to 2.9 ohms at the junction of the upper bass and low midrange 130-230 Hz , impedance throughout the HF range is stably high, being within 11.3-16.3 ohms above 2 kHz. Judging by the impedance graph, the inverter is tuned to a frequency of about 32 Hz the bass frequencies are given by the port tuning frequencies of 28 and 34 Hz .

The acoustic response of the speakers is smooth throughout the working range with a slight decrease of sensitivity in the midrange. On the axis the unevenness of the C807 working range is within +/-3.5 dB at frequencies up to 12 kHz, in the direction of 30° with the same unevenness the working range is even wider – up to 15 kHz, indicating a wide dispersion pattern of the speakers. Lower +/-3dB margin of 34 Hz. Tweeter equipped with a silk dome with special impregnation, made by DTT technology.
