Tamron releases new 28-75mm F/2 lens.8 Di III RXD for Sony E-mount

The first mention of the new lens was back in February, when Tamron announced its development, and the first prototype was demonstrated already at CP+ 2018. Today Tamron officially announced the 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD, revealing full specifications, release date and pricing information.

The lens was designed from the ground up for Sony’s full-frame DSLR cameras, with Tamron engineers focusing on three main functions: optical quality, mobility and silent autofocus. The lens weighs only 550g and is 11.6cm long. Although the body was made of polycarbonate instead of metal to save weight , the lens is still “waterproof” and has sealed seals throughout the barrel for more protection when shooting in the field.

Optically, the lens is comprised of 15 elements in 12 groups, including a low dispersion XLD glass element, a low dispersion LD glass element, a GM die-cast aspherical element and two hybrid aspherical elements which have been arranged “in an optimum arrangement to correct aberrations and reduce overall lens size

All lenses are coated with Tamron’s BBAR Broadband Band Anti-Reflection coating, which significantly reduces ghost and flare effects while maintaining sharp image quality. In addition, the front lens has a protective fluoride coating that repels water and prevents dust and dirt from sticking.

Finally, as the name suggests, the lens features Tamron’s new RXD auto-focus stepping motor which delivers fast, precise and “extremely quiet” autofocusing, eliminating unnecessary noise during movie recording.
