Starwind SSG9516 – electric grill with a man’s character

We tested the Starwind SSG9516 electric home grill for a whole month.

And today we will tell you how it cooks steaks, vegetables, kebabs and other delicious dishes.

Design and construction of Starwind SSG9516 grill

Electric grill designed for the home, but looks like a real professional.

It is massive with a large protruding handle, heavy weighs about 5 kg .

Dimensions

36 × 36 cm, height – from 13 to 18 cm.

The grill takes up a lot of countertop space and it’s best if it stands horizontally all the time, ready to use. You can put it upright and it is perfectly stable, but even then you need plenty of storage space.

Materials

The casing is made of steel and plastic.

Plastic is black, high quality, odorless, smooth and hard.

Steel finish handle, control panel, lid.

The front part of the handle is plastic, so it does not get hot during operation.

Impressions

Electric grill looks strict, solid and masculine. It stands on the table on rubberized feet, there will be no marks even on the light-colored table top.

The main advantage of Starwind SSG9516 is the possibility to set the top lid in one of six positions: from completely closed, open at different angles about 20, 30, 45, 60 degrees , 90 degrees and completely opened for 180 degrees. Thanks to this, it is convenient to cook not only steaks and vegetables but also large dishes like kebabs, various sausages and sandwiches on the grill.

Plates

Removable, non-stick coated bottom and top plates.

Size: 26 × 29 cm.

They are roomy: two huge steaks, or 8 kebabs, or a whole zucchini from the garden – easily fit on the bottom plate.

Grease tray

Located under the case. Grease drips down the notch at the back of the plate, and the tray is removed from the side on the left. It is convenient: no need to unwrap the grill, looking for how to take it out. Everything is simple: you take it out by moving forward, just as easy to put it back in place.

Power cord

Length with plug 76 cm. That’s why the grill has to be placed close to the power supply.

Quality, rubberized braided, 3 G 0.75 mm2.

Electric grill temperature

Offers three modes of operation:

1. Max. – 210 ± 20 °C. Time required for the electric grill to heat up to the set temperature – 3 min. 45 s.

2. Medium. – 140 ± 20 °C. Heating time to set t – 2 min. 34 s.

3. Min. – 50 ± 20 °C. Heating time up to the set t – 35 sec.

Control

Display

Plug the grill into the socket and the red light comes on.

Turn the knob to the desired position, the green light comes on.

When the plates are heated to a predetermined temperature, the second indicator light goes out. During cooking, it will periodically turn on and off, indicating that the heating element is working.

The switch

Temperature controlled by a rotary knob.

It is voluminous, non-slip, with inscriptions in American. Labels are not washed off, are large and well readable.

When switching from “0” to “Min.”A quiet buzzer sounds, switching to other modes is silent.

To turn on the maximum heat, you need to turn the knob clockwise to the stop. You can not even look at the panel: the switch does not turn further.

There are no marks on the switch to set the height, and the manual says nothing about it either. By experience we established that the mode is switched on, when the inscription with its denotation on the top of the.

Setting the top plate position

On the body of the grill on the right side is the top plate position controller.

• If the electric grill is in the closed position, just push the knob back a little, the lock will work. Grill will not swing open, it can be placed vertically.
• The same control sets the angle of opening of the lid to 90 degrees. When the grill is open, move the switch back to set the desired height.
• Lift up by the handle, open the grill lid to 90 degrees, and it stays in this position.
• Press the button on the right, you open the grill to 180 degrees, you can cook on two plates at once.

Output

Controls are simple and straightforward. All the buttons and controls work clearly, no complications arise. But there are issues with the manual – there is no clear description of the controls and incorrectly described the work of the heating indicator.

Grill operation

Cooked steaks, shawarma, chops, eggplant, zucchini, kebabs, sausages, croutons. Mostly used the maximum heat mode, for croutons – medium.

In all cases, except for cooking steaks, we did not wait for the plates to heat up to the maximum, but put the food a minute or two after turning on the grill.

We placed the top lid differently depending on the dish. I liked that it can be left open at different angles, it is useful for frying homemade sausages and kebabs.

A couple of times we opened the grill to 180 degrees, when we had to make a dish for a large company. Generally one half was enough.

• Plates heat evenly, vegetables and meat cooked regardless of where they were laid.
• During normal operation, the grill does not have an automatic shutoff, you must watch the degree of cooking. If you cook steaks, the meat thermometer can help, but experienced cooks can easily do without it.
• The grill retains heat well, the meat crusts up quickly, and the juice doesn’t run out much when grilling.
• It is great that the upper part of the case is very heavy: it strongly presses the vegetables or flat pieces of meat, which contributes to uniform and fast cooking.
• We recommend the use of silicone or wooden spatulas and accessories.

Safety

The grill shuts off automatically in case of overheating. Never once during the test have we had such a situation, the device did not overheat.

Care

Each of the plates is easy to remove. Can be cleaned in the sink with a sponge and your normal dishwashing detergent.

For cleaning stubborn dirt, the set has a special scraper.

The grease drip tray is easy to remove and wash.

Clean the casing with a damp cloth.

Fingerprints remain on top of metal lid. They can be easily cleaned with a microfiber cloth.
