Sony Cyber-Shot RX100 VI – professional functionality in a compact body.

Sony has released the new flagship model of its popular Cyber-shot RX100 series of compact cameras, the RX100 VI DSC-RX100M6 . The new camera is a further development of the RX100 V, and sets a new level of performance among compact cameras with its combination of high quality optics, fast focusing, high continuous shooting speed, and improved video recording capabilities.

At the core of the Sony RX100 VI is a 1-inch multi-layer COMS Exmor RS sensor with a resolution of 20mm.1 megapixel. Underneath the light-sensitive sensor surface is a DRAM chip, and the BIONZ X processor is responsible for image processing. Data is fed to the processor from a linear system integrator LSI that pre-splits that data into groups, increasing processing speed and optimizing image quality. Sensor sensitivity ranges from 125 to 12800 ISO units, expandable to ISO 80 and 25600.

Thanks to high-speed processing, the Sony RX100 VI delivers an incredibly fast continuous shooting speed of 24 fps at full resolution. The clipboard has enough room to record 233 images in JPG format before slowing down. The electronic-mechanical anti-distortion shutter allows you to work with shutter speeds from 30 to 1/3200 sec. and minimizes the distorting “rolling shutter” effect that occurs when shooting a fast-moving subject.

Sony

The RX100 VI uses a hybrid autofocus system with 315 phase AF points, covering 65% of the frame. This allows the camera to accurately focus on the subject in as little as 0.03 sec. even if it moves quickly in unpredictable directions. For easy selection of focus type, the camera has an AF-A mode that automatically switches between tracking or single-frame focusing.

A notable improvement in the Sony RX100 VI is the new ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T lens* with 8x optical zoom, which has become more versatile with an extended range of focal lengths from 24 to 200 mm Eq.35 mm . The lens is constructed using 15 elements in 12 groups, including 2 low-dispersed elements and 8 aspherical elements, among which 4 AA advanced aspherical lenses. Aperture is adjustable from f/2.8 to f/11 for 24 mm focal lengths and from f/4.5 to f/11 for 200 mm. The lens also has built-in SteadyShot for easy shooting in low-light conditions.

Photo equipment

To age the frame in the RX100 VI uses an LCD screen and electronic viewfinder. Viewfinder is recessed into upper body as standard and retractable via a switch on the side of the body. Video viewfinder has a diagonal of 0.39 inches, resolution of 2.35 mil. dots and magnification of 0.59h.

As for the LCD screen, it is now touch screen, with a diagonal of 3 inches and a resolution of 1.23 million. dots. The screen can flip up 180 degrees up and down 90 degrees, as well as touch focus and shutter release functions. With the AF touch panel, you can adjust the focus even when using the video viewfinder. In addition, in order to save energy, there is an available auto-disable monitor function, which can be adjusted through the menu and allows to take 30% more pictures than the standard settings.

Sony RX100 VI supports wireless data transfer by Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC. If you install the PlayMemories Mobile app on your smartphone, you can use your mobile device as a video recorder, remotely control your camera, geotag captured images, synchronize the date and time, and send footage to other devices.

Photo equipment

The new camera has advanced video recording capabilities. As with still photography, hybrid autofocus is available, which allows accurate tracking of subjects in movies and helps you focus smoother. Shooting 4K 3840×2160 video uses a full readout without pixel aggregation for superior resolution, reducing moiré and staggered outline effects.

Also, for the first time for the Cyber-Shot series, 4K-HDR mode is available, thanks to the new graphical profile HLG Hybrid Log-Gamma . Other features include support for S-Log3 and S-Log2 gamma curves, which provide greater flexibility when color correcting images in post-processing, image profile support, recording proxy files for easy network sharing and transmission to smartphones, and shooting slow motion video at 240, 480 and 960 fps.

Price and availability

Sony RX100 VI will go on sale in July 2018 at an estimated price of $1200

Yes, this camera has the potential to deliver comparable image quality to larger professional cameras. Despite its compact size, it is equipped with advanced features and technology that ensure high-resolution images and excellent clarity. While larger professional cameras may offer certain advantages in terms of dynamic range or low-light performance, this camera is designed to provide professional-grade results in a more portable and convenient package. Ultimately, it depends on the specific model and the photographer’s skill in utilizing its capabilities, but this camera is certainly capable of producing impressive image quality.

The Sony Cyber-Shot RX100 VI does offer remarkable professional features in its compact size. It may not match the image quality and versatility of larger professional cameras, but it competes admirably. The 1-inch sensor enables excellent image quality, while the impressive zoom range adds versatility. In terms of performance, it excels with its fast autofocus and high-speed continuous shooting. While it may not be the first choice for professional photographers who require utmost image quality, it is a convenient option for casual use or as a secondary camera for professionals on the go.
