SIGMA introduces first lens in its new Sports line

SIGMA launches the first “Sports” lens in its 120-300mm F2 series as of January 2013.8 DG OS HSM. The lens’ dustproof and waterproof construction, optical stabilization and constant aperture ratio across the entire zoom range ensure excellent usability. The optical design is based on SIGMA’s best practices and the latest technology in the field.

120-300 mm F2.8 DG OS HSM lens

120-300mm F2 lens.8 DG OS HSM for digital SLR cameras, first in the new Sports line. In addition to the extraordinary optical characteristics of the “Sports” line, the emphasis is on enhancing the performance of the camera for dynamic scenes.

This line offers photographers a multitude of functions and personal settings that can assist them in the most demanding shooting conditions and modes. Sigma’s new lens is primarily intended for sports, nature and hunting photography, but is also suitable for other uses that require long focal length lenses.

The optical scheme and mechanical design use advanced materials and technology that unlock the power of today’s digital cameras. Of the 23 optical elements used in the design, 1 element is made of special low-dispersion SLD-glass, 2 elements are made of FLD-glass – a unique “fluorite-like” low-dispersion glass, whose optical characteristics are almost equal to fluorite.

With these elements, chromatic aberrations magnification and position chromaticism are almost completely corrected. The optical design also corrects the sagittal coma and minimizes the blurring of point light sources in the peripheral regions of the image.

The result is detailed images that approach the quality of images taken with constant focal length lenses. The almost perfectly round petal aperture delivers beautiful blur for out-of-focus subjects.

The lens is easy to use due to its internal focusing and zooming system. Lens length remains unchanged. And with the fixed front part of the lens it is convenient to use, for example, various lens caps and polarizing filters.

Sigma’s multi-coated lenses reduce glare and ghosting, and deliver sharp, high-contrast images throughout the zoom range.

Dustproof and waterproof lens design provides excellent survivability for professional use. Mount, lens shift switch, focus ring and zoom ring are all protected. Convenient size, placement and surface texture of the focusing and zooming rings enhances operability.

The lens will be available with AF mounts: SIGMA, Nikon D , Canon.

The SIGMA Sports line seems promising! I’m curious to know how this lens compares to their previous offerings. Is the image quality and performance significantly improved? How does it fare in challenging outdoor conditions like fast-paced sports events? And most importantly, does it offer superior autofocus capabilities for capturing those split-second moments?
