Review of Panasonic Lumix DMC- G6 mirrorless camera

The situation with the flagship of the Lumix series is weird. DMC-G6 is by all indications a senior camera of photographic part of the system, but thus strongly understretches according to many parameters to top devices in model lines of competitors, and the price acts more likely in average amateur segment. DMC-GH4 could well be appointed as a senior model, but it has excessive functionality for a photographer. Compared to it, the G6 has a more compact body. The material is composite polymer, not magnesium alloy. This also caused a significant difference in weight: the “six” is almost 200g lighter.

Its competitors lose out in terms of speed. Continuous shooting at 7 fps is done in locked focus, while the active pointing requires a slowdown to 5 fps – for a professional this may not be enough, but for the amateur in just fine. It has more sensor resolution than Olympus cameras, but an experienced photographer would rather have hybrid autofocus than Panasonic can boast of.

At the same time a little less than GH4 number of buttons, switches and levers on the body practically does not affect the ease of operation and speed of access to basic shooting functions. The photographic toolset of this model is vast and very serious. The big number of scene modes, image editing tools, program filters are a bonus.

The Clear Retouch function is unusual for a serious camera. With its help and by means of the touch screen directly in the camera you can make retouching of portraits. You can cover the problematic areas on the model’s skin directly with your finger on the screen. It is clear that taking into consideration the size of the built-in display, you will have to sweat a lot to achieve an acceptable result. The capacitive rotary touch screen itself demonstrates a high resolution even by today’s standards.

Video mode options in the G6, truncated compared to the videographic model, will be more than enough for most amateurs. Full HD movies at a maximum of 60 fps progressive scan can be shot in PASM exposure control modes, adjusting the most important recording parameters.
