DxoMark Labs has just completed their latest sensor test for mirrorless cameras. This time the goal wasn’t to find the “best sensor in the world”, but to compare the full frame Leica M10 with its nearest competitors. The results are mixed, and give us pause for thought
Unlike the Nikon D850 and Sony a7R III, which each scored 100 points and occupy the top ranking position, the M10 scored only 86 points. Interestingly enough, from a sensor performance point of view, the Leica M10 is actually on par with the best APS-C cameras, outperforming them only in low light scenes due to the physically larger sensor.
DxoMark Lab notes: “Sure, higher image quality can be found in other cameras for less money, but Leica offers first-class technology, and a digital camera that looks similar to the M-system film cameras of past generations will be extremely appealing to fans of the brand. Add to that compatibility with virtually every Leica lens the company has ever produced, as well as ease of use, and the M10 is not a bad proposition for those who appreciate the quality of Leica systems.”
The key here is undoubtedly that “better image quality can be found in other cameras and for less money”. The question is whether a rich arsenal of lenses, top-notch engineering, “ease of use,” and that beautiful red dot will once again help shut down the price tag ?
