Olive 3HD Music Server

Music Server

Olive 3HD is created for true music lovers who do not like compressed music and consider only good old CD-player as a sound source. This music server is a high-class player that provides sound quality of CD-level or higher, and is also a solution to the problem of storing your collection of discs: the built-in 500 GB hard drive can store up to fifteen hundred CD-Audio discs or up to 5000 HD-quality music tracks.

DESIGN

The music servers of the American company Olive have an original design, which deliberately breaks the canons of High End technology. The Olive 3HD’s large body doesn’t look heavy or overly monumental thanks to its unusual palette of seemingly incompatible colors-silver and olive. Even more pathos lessened by the painted top panel, decorated with the names of musical genres.

The Olive 3HD remote control is as ingenious as the music server itself. It is unlike any other remote control in the world and is an olive rectangle of unusually regular shape.

All in all, the Olive 3HD looks like a real non-conformist.

DESIGN FEATURES

And it really is a serious piece of hardware. The server is equipped with a high resolution 24 bit/192 kHz audio processor from Cirrus Logic. Precision-drive hard drive, anti-vibration system, and fanless electronics cooling scheme are used to reduce read errors.

The built-in 500GB ultra-quiet hard drive stores up to 1,500 CDs of CD quality or up to 5,000 tracks in 24-bit HD . Moreover, the Olive 3HD is equipped with a TEAC hi-fi CD writer, which not only plays CDs but also records CD-Audio and mp3 music on CD-R as well as creating data CDs.

The front panel of the music server has a built-in color widescreen LCD touch screen with 480×272 pixels and diagonal size of 4.3″ 11 cm . The display is for setting, navigating through the archive of music recordings and controlling the functions of the music server.

CD drive has no boot tray – there is a slot on the front panel for placing and removing discs.

SETTINGS AND FUNCTIONS

The graphical LCD display shows a color illustrated menu, as well as detailed track or disc information. The screen resolution is high, so all text is perfectly readable.

The server can be operated either through the remote control or the LCD, which is a touch panel.

Use the menu to locate the disc or song you want and the screen not only shows the title, genre and artist, but also the disc’s cover picture.

The server allows you to record your own music CD-Rs, so the necessary function of editing the names of songs and discs is implemented, to enter which you must activate the on-screen keyboard, and since the screen is touch sensitive, it is not difficult to enter the name.

The control system is complex and high tech, so the reactions to the control commands are not as fast as we would like them to be.

COMMUTATION

On the rear panel of the server there is a stereo pair for analog audio output and LAN and USB interfaces.1/2.0. With a LAN interface that provides up to 1 gigabit bandwidth, this server can be integrated into a LAN, allowing you to transmit a digital audio stream simultaneously to different rooms. USB allows you to play music from removable media.

SOUND REPRODUCTION

The Olive 3HD supports playback of two lossless audio coding formats WAV and FLAC and two compressed audio formats mp3 128 and 320 kbps and AAC 128 kbps .

The music server can record audio files on CD-R, and one and the same song can be both recorded and played back at the same time.

The sound has a liberated, spacious character with long aftershocks in the bass register and a clear, sonorous play in the high frequency range. I liked the quality of the vocal performance and excellent transmission of the pulses of percussion instruments that sound without coloring or excessive harshness.
