Leica has introduced a new M10-D rangefinder camera that brings the analog experience into the world of digital photography. The absence of an LCD screen and the ability to configure key shooting parameters, both manually and with a smartphone using a special application FOTOS, which was developed by Leica.
The core of the M10-D is a full-frame 24-Megapixel CMOS sensor and the Maestro II processor. Images taken are saved as DNG or JPEG files on an SD card or in the internal memory, which has a capacity of 2 GB. Not only can an optical viewfinder be used to build a frame, but also an electronic Leica Visoflex, which is mounted in a hot shoe. The camera automatically switches to LiveView mode when it is set up.
Among the controls are a shutter speed and ISO dial located on the top of the body, as well as a large multifunction dial located on the back of the camera instead of the LCD screen. The inner ring of this disk is used to set the exposure compensation, and the outer ring is responsible for turning on off the camera and switching to Wi-Fi mode. It also has an unusual thumb rest, which is stylized like a film camera’s rewind lever.
In addition to analog controls, a smartphone with the FOTOS app, available for iOS and Android, can be used to configure the shooting settings. The app also lets you use your smartphone screen to frame your shots instead of the LCD screen, and the images you capture can be saved and edited directly on your mobile device for later sharing on social media.
