Nikon Coolpix P7100 compact camera: fans of small classic rangefinder style cameras

The addition to Nikon’s senior “premium” camera index doesn’t mean a revolution, but a good consistent improvement. The designer listened to the critics of amateurs and journalists, corrected the key mistakes, and thus made a good camera with almost no changes in its key features. The P7100 is equipped with a swiveling screen mount – with its stunning resemblance to Canon G12 it was strange to be deprived of such a handy feature of the latter by the way, the screen itself is much better than the “Canon” one – 3 inches and 921K . dots .

An unusual scroll wheel has appeared on the body – on the front panel, under the index finger of the right hand. The solution is not obvious, but in a serious camera can not be a lot of disks.

Other improvements are not expressed in the characteristics, but are understood only in practice: the device became faster and more responsive in almost all interactions and operations, from automatic focusing to redrawing the screen menus. Finally, the popular cross-process effect filters have been updated.

The basic specifications have not changed and now look a little outdated. The 10 megapixel 1/1.7 inch sensor shoots well, but slowly, and can’t write Full HD video. The Nikkor 28-200mm lens isn’t a leader in either wide angle or aperture F2.8 at the short end either.

But it’s still one of the most serious and advanced compacts for experienced amateurs who value comprehensive shooting control, RAW format and advanced features like motion detection or virtual horizon.

Fans of small “classic” rangefinder style cameras will definitely love the Coolpix P7100. There is, however, one important point to keep in mind here.

For its size and weight, the P7100 isn’t much more compact than today’s mirrorless system cameras. And not much cheaper. So if shooting quality is important to you, it’s worth scrolling a few pages to the “system” section.
