Fujifilm FinePix X10 compact camera: less surprising for aficionados but better suited for a wider range of photographers

“The X100 for neophytes” is a compromise between the flavor of a classic, sort of rangefinder camera and the aspirations of less conservative amateur photographers. So while the FinePix X100’s eye-catching retro styling and production quality are maintained, the younger model is smaller, lighter, friendlier and less expensive. And it got a zoom lens.

Fujifilm listens to what people say about the premium X100. And at the same time made a camera almost the same, only less focused on surprising connoisseurs, but better suited to a wide range of photographers. The X10 is, in essence, a standard compact, but it was built with an emphasis not on more electronic technology, but on quality, ergonomics and style.

What sets it apart from the X100 is its compact 2/3-inch sensor with 12 million pixels. pix. The sensor is made by the proprietary EXR technology and offers the following bonus features: dynamic range expansion mode by changing the exposure parameters of half of the sensor cells obtaining a 6 megapixel image with a large brightness gradation and sensitivity increase mode by “merging” adjacent cells obtaining also a 6 megapixel frame, but at high sensitivity and with reduced noise at the same time .

Besides, the camera shoots 7 frames per second in continuous mode and Full HD video.

28-112mm zoom has replaced the “fix” with aperture ratio from F2 at the short end and from F2.8 at the long end. True, the unique X100 Hybrid Viewfinder disappeared at the same time, with the younger model equipped with a “straight” optical viewfinder with zoom. However, you can still shoot with the usual sight on the screen 2.8 inches, 460,000. dots .

Controls lost their “classic” format: aperture dials replaced the standard mode dial and exposure compensation dial. Not as charismatic, but much more convenient for amateur photographers, especially those who shoot more often on automatic. No less important functions. There is also a built-in RAW-converter, and, for example, an electronic level.

The main drawbacks of the attractive and appealing Fujifilm FinePix X100 are its high price and large size which makes it a bad competitor for mirror-less cameras – just because you can’t appeal to everyone with style alone!

The FinePix X10 has handled this beautifully: an advanced compact with comfortable, bright optics and high image quality that directly competes with models like the Canon G12 or the Nikon P7100. Competitors serious. But the X10 wins at least with its expensive and stylish exterior.
