Dyson: it’s complicated. But how easy!

Dyson engineer Nick Schneider talks simply about complicated things – about Dyson technologies and innovations that are designed to make everyday life easier. And how this sophisticated technology works in our homes? Of course, it’s very simple.

Interviewed by Polina STRIZHAK.

Dyson Cool AM06 Fan.

JUST ABOUT FANS

“BT”: Nick, amazingly, the new models of the Dyson Cool bladeless fans are virtually silent! How to make them quieter? Can this fan be used at night, won’t it interfere with a good night’s sleep??

n.sh.Low noise level: yes, it’s one of our biggest achievements, and it was low enough as it was we’ve been able to reduce it by another 75%, so you can leave it running at night. It won’t disturb anyone’s sleep, you can be sure. This was accomplished by a major improvement in the airflow trajectory, resulting in a significant reduction in turbulence throughout the fan. In layman’s terms, the direction of air flow is lined up so that it passes through the air ducts more efficiently, and therefore less noisy.

“BT”: Do you think it is possible to “teach” a fan not just to create a feeling of coolness through the movement of the air flow, but to actually cool the air – at least a little bit?

n.sh.Theoretically it’s all possible, but it’s a matter of cost, and another question is why? It is much cheaper to buy a conditioner than to buy such a fan, in the creation of which so much effort and money have been invested, while the conditioner will cool the air more effectively.

“BT”: Quieter operation is the only significant difference between the new Dyson Cool fan models and their predecessors, or is there something else?

n.sh.: In principle, we had two main goals: to reduce the noise level and at the same time to keep the power of the air flow. And all technologies used in new fans are aimed, first of all, at this. For example, the new fans have a Helmholtz chamber, which is used to trap and disperse motor noise.

“BT: Is it possible to make a Dyson fan wireless? Question from a connoisseur of wireless vacuum cleaners Dyson.

n.sh.H We are constantly listening to consumer requests, so that we only create and market products that will be needed and wanted. Theoretically it’s possible to create a wireless fan, but is it as necessary as, say, a cordless vacuum cleaner with which you are constantly moving around the apartment??

We try to introduce those technologies that seriously affect the consumer properties of the product. Safety that’s why our fans don’t have blades and low noise level are priorities for the fan.

EVEN SIMPLER – ABOUT VACUUM CLEANERS

“BT: There are 54 cyclones in the Dyson Cinetic multi-cyclone system. Why so much? How the Dyson Cinetic is fundamentally different from Dyson’s previous multi-cycle technology?

n.sh.: It’s really worth explaining such things. The more cyclones, the more effective filtration of incoming air, the faster and better it captures dust particles, and the microscopic, which makes Dyson models the most effective not only in cleanliness, but also in the fight against allergens. Imagine if the air coming out of your vacuum cleaner was actually cleaner than the air you breathe, and your house was free of the things that can cause allergies: dust mites and their products, plant pollen, etc.p.

Fans

“BT: The latest Dyson models don’t require filter maintenance. How this result was achieved?

n.sh.”BT: Dyson’s innovative Cinetic technology is used in our DC52 cyclone vacuum cleaners, and, indeed, the filter is designed to last the lifetime of the cleaner without the need for maintenance. The Dyson Cinetic system’s 54 small cyclones each have a flexible tip that vibrates at a high frequency when the vacuum cleaner is in use, so there’s no chance of the cyclones clogging. The advanced cyclone system puts so little strain on the filter that it is maintenance-free: it needs no flushing or changing.

Home Appliances

“BT”: It is known that one of the most common causes of allergies is the products of dust mites, of which there are hundreds of species worldwide and which live everywhere. Many manufacturers make special mattress beater attachments and equip models with UV lamps. Why isn’t Dyson going down this road??

n.sh.: We researched this issue from a scientific, engineering, not a marketing and advertising point of view. And here’s the conclusion: in order to UV lamp effectively treated area to be cleaned, you need to hold the nozzle in one place for about 30 seconds. Can you imagine how long such a cleanup would last?! That’s why it’s better to build powerful, reliable motors and an advanced cyclone system that allows the vacuum cleaner to run for an entire cleaning cycle without losing suction power – and that’s enough to remove harmful dirt from any surface.

READERS ASK

“BT”: Nick, our readers have asked some purely mundane questions after encountering a bit of a problem when using Dyson vacuums. For example, can the little cyclones clog when the cat litter falls into them??

n.sh.: It’s not very clear how it’s fundamentally different from other garbage. Vacuuming, grooming your pets, the important thing is that it’s a dry filler.

“BT: Some Dyson vacuum cleaner manuals have a clause that says you can’t vacuum, for example, flour. But the pollen or traces of dust mites – strong allergens – are about the same fine consistency. What’s the difference? Can you vacuum flour with the new models with Dyson Cinetic technology?

n.sh.: You can’t vacuum a very large amount of flour at once, such as half a kilo. And if you spill some while cooking or want to pick up flour residue from your work surface, you’re welcome!

“BT: In Dyson models with Ball technology, the ball heats up quite decently. So don’t be alarmed?

n.sh.: That’s normal, because that’s where the engine is. We take temperature control very seriously at all stages of product testing – we take quality control very seriously.

“BT”: Although most cyclonic vacuum cleaners have a system of easy release of the container by pressing a button , still the problem of hygiene is not completely solved, some of the garbage gets stuck, fine dust when shaking out can get into the air. Does Dyson plan to improve the dust collector and its cleaning system?

n.sh.New vacuum cleaner models come with a special thin plastic spatula, which you can use to detach the jammed waste from the sides of the container without getting your hands dirty. It literally does it in one go.

“BT”: Cyclone vacuum cleaners are noisier than bag-based ones, Dyson is no exception. Will Dyson work to reduce noise levels? Or is noise a price to pay for the benefits of cyclones??

n.sh.We’re constantly working to reduce noise levels: improving sound insulation, optimising airflow patterns, etc.d. Dyson vacuum cleaners have a balance of power, which is the key to quality cleaning, and a noise level that is very low for such power.

“BT: Why doesn’t Dyson make electronic power control in its models, providing only a mechanical airflow control? It’s fundamental?

n.sh.: This position is also the result of our research and analysis. We think the mechanical regulator is more reliable, and besides, it has nothing to do with the operation of the motor, because if you constantly switch modes with the electronic regulator, it increases the load on the motor.
