A key goal for both companies is to ensure the compatibility of 5G solutions from different manufacturers

The partnership with Nokia comes as part of the implementation of the Silicon Valley 5G Summit agreements, which took place last October. Both manufacturers believe that a successful transition to 5G, as well as the commercial success of the standard, will largely depend on the mobile industry’s ability to achieve interoperability between different solutions.

Nokia’s executive vice president of mobile networking products Frank Weyerich said:

“Close collaboration is key to transforming the 5G standard into new business for the mobile market and other industry sectors. The interoperability testing between Nokia and Samsung is an important step to create a 5G standard that works across networks and customers’ devices from different manufacturers, helping bring 5G networks closer to deployment and success in the market.

The companies have been negotiating the collaboration since early last year and have already completed the initial phases of testing and will continue research during 2017.

Engineers from both companies will work to ensure the compatibility and high performance of Samsung’s 5G subscriber devices CPE that will enable 5G home internet connectivity with Nokia’s AirScale radio access solutions. This is the kind of equipment expected to be used to deploy the first 5G networks in the U.S. and South Korea during 2017 and 2018. Before the widespread commercial deployment of 5G in 2020.

“With 5G, the network architecture becomes more flexible to accommodate completely new use cases, such as Fixed Wireless Access,

– said Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, executive vice president of next-generation communications at Samsung Electronics. –

Working together toward a common goal is key to building a sustainable and resilient 5G ecosystem. Samsung builds devices and infrastructure to build end-to-end 5G solution. We work with device chipset manufacturers to ensure the widest choice for operators. We are also excited to partner with network solutions developer Nokia to enable operators to freely use our 5G devices.”.

5G networks will open up an unprecedented amount of possibilities and enable useful and convenient services for consumers and businesses in a wide range of industries. To do so, the technology behind these networks must be flexible and reliable. The development of industry-wide standards will enable 5G networks to meet business and user expectations. This is why advanced companies such as Samsung and Nokia are focused on building a global ecosystem. Partnering with device manufacturers gives cellular operators a great opportunity to build their 5G networks to meet market needs.

Both companies will be actively working on interoperability issues before the new 5G standard is adopted, scheduled by 3GPP for 2018.
