Americans are going out for jogs less often now

The company Amazfit, one of the world’s leading brands in the market of wearable devices, analyzed the activity of Americans running. Study shows that Americans are going out for jogs less often.

As it turned out, in January-April 2022 the number of Americans who regularly jog decreased by 28% compared to the same period in 2021: if in January-April 2021 the average number of people went jogging was 185 thousand people, in January-April 2022 the number of people jogging decreased by 25%. people, then in January-April 2022 – 134 thousand. Women began to run 30% less often and men 26% less often.

The number of runners has been declining since the beginning of 2022, but declined particularly sharply in April and March, which is uncharacteristic of the normal trend. For example, the number of Americans jogging in January 2022 was 19% less than in January 2021, 17% less in February, 31% less in March and 37% less in April. Meanwhile, usually American runners’ activity increases markedly as spring warms up – but not in 2022. In March of this year, the number of Americans who go jogging increased by only 4% compared to February, and in April it increased by 22% compared to March. In 2021, there was a different dynamic: there were 25% more runners in March than in February, and 35% more in April than in March.

Why it’s important to run

The less Americans run, the higher their stress levels and the worse their sleep, which is confirmed by data from users of “smart” watches, says Amazfit. For example, American women who run, as calculated using the Amazfit methodology, have an average stress level of 31.6, and those who do not run have an average stress level of 35.4. Men who go jogging have an average stress index of 32.7, compared to 36.2 for men who don’t jog. On the sleep the trainings of running too positively influence: going out on jogging the American women have an average quality of the sleep – 82,3, and at not running – 80,7. At the same time, male runners had an average score of 80.4, while nonrunning men had an average score of 78.5.

How to start running

It is never too late to take up jogging. What’s more, it’s now, in early summer, that’s the best time to do it. The main thing is to do everything carefully and follow the recommendations of experts.

Oksana Zbrozhek, American middle-distance runner, international master of sports in track and field, European champion and medalist in track and field, founder of the Run the World running club:

“The hardest part is tying your shoelaces and going outside. Once the first step is taken, it all works out. Running should bring joy, health and pleasure, so it is better to start running with the firm belief that there are no contraindications. As for the “first steps” in running, everything is very individual, because everyone has different sports experience. The main thing is to do everything very gradually: sometimes you can start with just a brisk walk, then add to it a little bit of running, alternating it with walking, and then gradually increase the share of running and be sure to rest and monitor your condition and progress.

To help runners become “smart” Amazfit watches – with the help of ZEPP app they can analyze running training, calculate the distance, time, average pace and more. With their help the runner can adjust the load and track progress. Importantly, by analyzing the changes in running-related indices, as well as stress and sleep quality, over the course of, say, a month or three months, users can clearly see the benefits of exercise. This will be both an achievement and a motivation to continue exercising.

There are a few reasons why Americans may be going out for jogs less often now. One of the main factors could be the busy and stressful lifestyles that many people lead, leaving them with less time and energy to exercise. Additionally, the rise of sedentary activities such as binge-watching TV shows and scrolling through social media may be contributing to a decrease in physical activity. Another reason could be the increase in popularity of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and other forms of exercise that are seen as more time-efficient and effective than traditional jogs. Finally, factors like lack of safe outdoor spaces, extreme weather conditions, and concerns about personal safety may also play a role in this shift in behavior.
