A mini review of the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II compact camera

This camera is only formally in the compact class, because it has a built-in lens. The size, weight, ergonomics and features of the G1 X Mark II make it look more like a DSLR, or at least a “system” camera. No optical viewfinder as compared to the previous model. Comparable with the “system” cameras at her and the sensor – light receptor 18,7 × 14 mm slightly smaller format APS-C.

The G1 X Mark II does not have most of the controls found on the top deck of the G-Series, such as the dials for shutter speed and exposure compensation. Two rings are attached to the lens barrel, the functionality of which can be adjusted in the menu. They are responsible for providing the photographer with comfortable operation with a variety of manual settings. An additional wheel on the back of the camera is located around the multi-position navigation key. So we can say that the ergonomics of the device has not suffered.

G1 X Mark II, positioned as a second camera to a serious DSLR owner, is naturally tightly integrated into the Canon EOS system. Users can enhance the camera’s capabilities by installing proprietary Speedlite flashes or transmitters and use the same remote controls through the E3 port as on DSLRs. To protect the optics from reflection and glare optional hood, and a variety of filters can be screwed on a lens adapter with a thread of 58 mm. An exclusive accessory is the EVF-DC1 external electronic viewfinder with 2.36 million dots.

Canon has found a good niche for its flagship: the G1 X Mark II is not in direct competition with anyone. The latest top-end ultrazooms offer a larger zoom range with constant aperture, but have smaller sensors and a larger footprint. You’ll get a small quality advantage and a more pocket-sized compact with an “honest” APS-C sensor, but its focal-lens optics won’t bring the versatility of the G1 X Mark II zoom.

experienced photographers will love the specialized camera features such as support for sync with external flashes at slow shutter speeds up to 1/4000 sec, the ability to save images in 14-bit RAW format, the histogram display in real time and adjusted exposure. A significant disadvantage for some will be the practical lack of continuous shooting. A pleasant addition – the presence of the Wi-Fi module.
