Yamaha CD-S2000 CD player test

Article content

The player easily conveys any idea of the composer: technical songs sound technical, warm music warms, and rousing moments of music do not leave indifferent. The sound of the prelude to the symphony in general causes a whole range of emotions, just like during a real concert.

Features

Besides CDs, this player also plays SACDs. To reduce mutual interference the analog and digital circuits are fed from separate blocks. The sides of the case are covered with yellow solid wood covers, which either because of the material or the color makes the unit look less technical.

The small display shows the most useful information – the track number and playing time, which can be displayed in one of three modes: from the beginning of the track, to the end of the track and to the end of the disc. The brightness of the symbols is adjustable within four levels, excluding pure audio mode, in which the display is completely off.

You can program the order of multiple tracks using the remote control. Song shuffle and repeat track or disc as a whole function.

The tray moves quietly and unhurriedly. The tray has rubber inserts on its surface, on which a CD is placed, so when you move the tray, the CD does not rattle.

The particularity of switching system that not every CD-player has is a pair of XLR-type connectors, which allow you to output a stereo audio signal using balanced connection.

Sound of

Pop, electronic music. Music quickly arouses interest, aided in no small measure by the wealth of musical detail and the variety of voices, with absolute comfort for the ear at any volume.

Very organically combined electronic effects and a variety of live exotic instruments such as exotic drums, and sounds of nature are woven into the musical canvas very harmoniously.

The balance of top, bass and midrange is almost perfect, the music flows in a single homogeneous flow without noticeable surges or dips. The player produces an enveloping, iridescent bass that unobtrusively fills everything around it with soft, warm waves.

Low beats have high density, even in the mid-bass the pulses sound deep and well defined, especially the single beats. You can hear the detail of the way the drum’s membrane vibrates, the kick in the upper bass has a very resolved aftershow, it’s even surprising, how rich the sound of this, in general, uncomplicated instrument is conveyed.

The treble is very informative, very noticeable and yet very well defined: for all its sharpness, the treble is never elevated above the rest of the sound to cause discomfort. Sounds in the upper mids and highs are not pressurized by either extraneous coloration or excessive detail.

The range of high sounds is very detailed, starting from the upper middle and ending, in fact, with the whole top. Stereo circuit capability is enough to make string and metal percussion aftershounds sound transparent and airy.

The sound is very wide, it goes far beyond the loudspeakers, and sometimes you get the feeling that the sound space is about to close behind you. The music is relaxing, on the one hand, and enchanting on the other hand with the clarity and immensity of the sound waves, sometimes making you feel like you are surrounded by glowing, interlaced, but clearly discernible strings of sound.

Rock

. The sound is evenly distributed between all frequency ranges. Despite the powerful bass, the middle and top do not remain deprived of energy, so even the muted cymbal sounds very intelligible.

The bass is very detailed, bringing out a lot of low-frequency nuances in the music. The bass is also very clean, so even the fastest bass beats follow each other with full, voluminous pulses of relief, without losing transparency for a moment. Even raising the volume unnecessarily does not diminish your enjoyment of the sound. No matter how rich the bass playing is, the low vocals remain intelligible against it.

The middle part sounds detailed and sharp, though one cannot say that the aftershocks are very long, they have more of a dense, accurate nature. In the middle the situation is as follows: the closer the sound is to the upper range, the more intelligible it becomes, so the ringing of the whole metal percussion group is very noticeable and long lasting. Numerous details of sound are generously scattered across the entire song, which comes through clearly thanks to the clarity of the sound. Fading out in the finale, the track sounds clear and understandable until the very last moment, not drowning in noise as it often does.

Rock sounds great on the Yamaha CD-S2000, it transmits energy and grooves with extraordinary ease.

Jazz

. The player gives off subtle cymbal tinkling in the background and a neatly delineated double bass in the mid-bass, the instrument lays out its rhythmic pattern in an elastic pulse. Sound is not flattened in any range, so the music sounds like a rousing, open flow. Piano notes sound just like a well-honed double bass even in the critical lower midrange areas, but without losing their naturalness and accuracy.

The percussive metal sound is conveyed with vividness. The sonic detail is so high you can hear the piano soundboard resonating. Vocals are warm and open. The choir palette, with all of the most distant voices, is faithfully rendered.

You get the feeling you can turn up the volume as high as you like and get no background noise at all.

Classics

. First of all, I would like to note the way the musical scene is conveyed: if you close your eyes, you have the feeling that the walls have spread out, opening up a large, almost tangible space. Great symphony orchestra sounds wide and massive. Viola, French horn and flute parts are located crystal clear, especially if these instruments are soloists. Violins and bass winds a little less distinctive.

In the middle the most resolved sounds of its upper part, violas, for example, play more transparently than violins. Accurately transmitted impulses – big cymbals and big drums sound thunderous, but not deafening.

Narrower moments of compositions this unit extends so much that you simply do not notice them: in both climax and prelude the sound is transmitted in the same coherent way.

The richness of sound ensures that the musical phrases are complete, all the themes of a symphonic work sound equally meaningful.

There is a magical feeling of a real concert hall, when the music, bouncing off the speakers, begins to come from far away, as if from a real orchestra, although you know in your mind that there is nothing but walls where the sound comes from.
