Which battery to choose??

The market for standard batteries, or what we commonly refer to as batteries, is very large. TV remote control, Walkman, photo flash, children’s toys – all are powered by batteries. And the batteries themselves can be different: “finger” AA, LR6 , “little” AAA, LR03 , “keg” C, LR14 D, LR20 , “crown” 6LR61 and so on. Today we are going to look at some of the most popular batteries – AA, LR6. There are three basic types of LR6 batteries – saline, alkaline and lithium.

Salt Batteries

Salt-carbon batteries, aka zinc-carbon, are the cheapest available chemical current sources.

This battery is a cylindrical zinc container, which serves as both the case and the “minus” at the same time. In the center of the container is the graphite rod positive electrode , aka “plus”. A layer of manganese dioxide is placed around the anode, and the space remaining between it and the container walls is filled with a paste of ammonium chloride and zinc chloride diluted in water. The composition of this paste may vary: in low-power batteries prevails ammonium chloride, in the more powerful Heavy Duty – zinc chloride.

In operation, the battery zinc gradually oxidizes, small holes appear in the container, from which the electrolyte starts to leak, and the battery can ruin your equipment. In Soviet times it was quite common. In modern batteries, the zinc container is securely packed in an extra outer casing. But you shouldn’t leave a dead battery in your camera for too long.

For this type of batteries the word “powerful” is relative: in the camera – “soapbox” they are enough for 3-4 frames, but in the lamp lamp for 15 minutes of work. These batteries are ideal for remote controls, clocks, electronic thermometers.

Alkaline batteries

Alkaline means “alkali”, so this type of battery is popularly referred to as an alkaline battery. These batteries are more expensive.

The negative terminal of an alkaline battery consists of zinc powder, which increases the speed of the chemical reaction, and thus the current output of the battery. The positive pole consists of manganese dioxide. The main difference from a salt cell is the type of electrolyte. In alkaline batteries the electrolyte is potassium hydroxide.

Alkaline batteries are well suited for devices with a power consumption of tens to hundreds of milliamps. However, this type of battery has one serious drawback – high internal resistance. This means that if you load it with a really big current its voltage will drop drastically and a lot of energy will be used to heat up the battery itself. This type of battery is ideal for audio players, digital cameras, radios, etc. If a digital camera with salt batteries can not even turn on, then the alkaline batteries are enough for 40 minutes of full work.

Lithium batteries

The last type of widely used batteries are lithium batteries. The main advantage of lithium batteries is lower internal resistance in comparison with alkaline batteries: their capacity little depends on the load current. If you put them in a digital camera, alkaline batteries will “die” in 40 minutes, but lithium batteries will last three hours.

Lithium batteries are extremely durable – they have a shelf life of 15 years! years, at this time the battery will lose only 10% of its capacity. Lithium batteries can work at subzero temperatures, but in the salt and alkaline batteries the electrolyte freezes and they stop working.

The downside of lithium batteries is the extremely high price, they are three to five times more expensive than alkaline batteries.
