Sony World Photography Awards 2019 Jury List Announced

The World Photography Organization is pleased to introduce the jurors for the world’s most diverse photography competition, the Sony World Photography Awards 2019. To celebrate, a selection of submissions to the Open Competition has been published, and the chairman of the panel of experts has given helpful advice to potential entrants.

The World Photography Organization today also publishes the initial list of countries participating in the 2019 National Competition. The National Competition has been part of the Sony World Photography Awards for many years and provides a unique opportunity for entrants of all levels from more than 50 countries to be recognized in the world-renowned photography competition. The annual Sony World Photography Awards, now in its 12th year, celebrates the achievements of contemporary photography over the past year in all genres. Anyone interested can participate for free and apply at worldphoto.org/swpa.

An expert jury searches for the best examples of contemporary photography

The 2019 jurors have been selected by the World Photography Organization – all of whom are experts working in the photography industry. This year’s panel, which will judge the 10 categories of the Professional Competition, consists of industry leaders from around the world:

Erin Barnett is Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the International Center of Photography USA .

Brendan Embser – Editor, Aperture Magazine USA .

Olivier Laurent – foreign photo editor at The Washington Post USA .

Emma Lewis is Associate Curator of Exhibitions at Tate Gallery UK .

Isabella van Marle is head of exhibitors, Unseen Platform Netherlands .

Chair: Mike Trow – editor, photographer, producer UK .

Chairman Mike Trow about the competition:

“I am honored to serve as chairman of the Sony World Photography Awards Professional Section Jury. This grand event presents the public with a wide variety of topics, stories, and photographs from around the world. My advice to entrants is to choose your nominations carefully and believe in your photography story. Show how you see the world and don’t use clichĂ©s. Techniques and styles of photography are becoming bolder and more dynamic, so a high level of technical skill is also necessary. To impress the world’s leading group of experts, you need maximum dedication and the ability to edit your work in a way that is consistent, dynamic and beautiful.”.

The open competition consists of 10 categories, and the judges will judge one photo from each entrant. The competition is chaired by Rebecca McClelland, chief photographer and head of contemporary art at Saatchi & Saatchi and Prodigious UK . In addition, she will chair the judging panel for the Junior and National.

This year’s student competition jury will also include three leading experts from the international photography industry:

Jason Baron, Chief Creative Photographer, BBC Creative UK

Bruno Bayley, Managing Editor of Magnum Photos UK

Jeff Hamada, founder and editor, BOOOOOOOOOM Agency Canada .

Inspiring photographs from the participants of the Open Competition

After a record number of entries in 2018, organizers of the Sony World Photography Awards 2019 have already received thousands of diverse, unique photos from around the world. The photos published today are from 10 categories in the Open Competition. Each photographer may submit only one image. Worldwide recognition for photographers at every level thanks to the National Awards and Grants from Sony

Every year the Sony World Photography Awards celebrate achievement and reward photographers of all skill levels for outstanding work in the Professional and Student competitions and the world’s best single photo in the Open and Junior categories. National competition honors local talent from more than 50 countries. Winners and finalists will receive worldwide recognition and participation in international exhibitions, as well as cash prizes and the latest Sony digital photography equipment.

Winners will also be eligible for grants from Sony to fund future photography projects. Several selectedProfessional contest winners will receive $7,000 grants, and selected Student contest finalists will each receive $3,500 to work together on a new Sony and World Photography Organization project.

Deadlines for entries and results announcement

Entries for the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards are being accepted until:

December 30, 2018. – Student Competition.

January 4, 2019. – Open, Junior and National Contests.

January 11, 2019. – Professional Competition.

Finalists for the Open and Junior competitions will be announced on February 5, 2019.Winners of the Open and National Competition will be announced on February 26, 2019. Finalists in the Professional and Student categories will be announced on April 2, 2019.

Photographer of the Year

In the Professional and Open Contests, the winners of the Student and Junior Contests, as well as the winners of the Professional Contest categories will be announced on April 17, 2019.
