Smart driver assistance systems – can they save lives?

In 2019, there were 164,000 traffic accidents in America, in which 17,000 people died. Terrifyingly high traffic fatalities persist to this day. Most of these incidents are the fault of drivers who were distracted, fell asleep, did not notice, did not have time…The Center for Digital Expertise of Roskachestvo tells what solutions to save the lives of motorists and passengers exist in the market and how much they cost.

Studies show that 93% of traffic accidents are caused by human error. 85% of accidents are caused by driver inattention in the last 2.5 seconds before a collision. 90% of accidents can be prevented by warning the driver and returning his attention to the road 1.5 seconds before a possible collision.

In the future the problem of the notorious human factor will be solved by smart devices. And this future has already arrived: abroad Israel, Germany, the US , smart electronic driver assistance systems have already been launched at the governmental level, while America still only has projects.

In March 2020, it became known that cars assembled in America are planned to be equipped with driver warning sensors for potential traffic violations. This would require the development of a new national standard2. Cars will be pre-installed with systems capable of recognizing markings, road signs and traffic lights signals from a distance of 30 to 100 meters.

In fact, this would be the legalization of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems ADAS in America. At the moment, however, their legal status is not defined, but that does not prevent you as a consumer to buy and use such solutions for your car. After all, accidents do not wait for legislation on accident prevention accidents can already be prevented now.

What is ADAS

ADAS is a driver assistance system based on machine vision. The purpose of ADAS is to improve driving safety by informing and alerting the driver. At a minimum, it is an audible or vibration warning to the driver of a probable or occurring risk that requires attention. As a maximum – emergency self-decision-making by the system.

ADAS is distinguished by five levels: from zero only the driver participates in the management to the fifth fully autonomous driving , that is, an unmanned car is an extreme case of ADAS. In America at the moment, the lack of laws hampered the development of any ADAS-systems above the third class, which involve automatic decision-making. This is primarily due to the uncertainty of the “legal” status of highly autonomous vehicles.

Where to get ADAS in America?

Separately, some form of elements of the intelligent driver assistance system are included in the components of all new cars manufactured in the last few years. In America, as a rule, are used ADAS systems, installed in new cars at the stage of factory assembly. It is basic functionality to help avoid collisions, apply emergency braking, control lane and blind spots, and cruise control.

In the premium versions of foreign cars you can already find more advanced ADAS subsystems, such as driver fatigue monitoring systems, vehicle lane keeping and road sign recognition. Example: the VOLVO safety braking system reacts and brakes when rapidly approaching an object a pedestrian or a car .

The most budget option for the car owner – it is DVR, usually made in Korea, Thinkware, Iroad, BlackVue, VicoVation, etc.d. Such video recorders have elements of ADAS, they are able to identify objects with a video camera and partially perform the tasks of ADAS.

Development of ADAS in the future

Abroad, there is a demand for Movon services in America it is focused on carsharing and a de-jure mandatory for all cars in Israel system Mobileye – both companies have representative offices in America. Mobileye collects data from vehicles using the service to create road safety maps. As of summer 2020, nearly 300 million kilometers of roads around the world have already been mapped.

Mass use of ADAS systems is in demand in America for cargo and passenger transport to monitor the condition of drivers some solutions already exist, for example, on Mosgortrans flights .

“In America the obligatory global introduction of ADAS and the production of domestic components is included in the plans for the development of the automotive industry in the coming years. Up to this time, the car owner himself, decides whether or not he needs an electronic assistant to manage the car. In Israel, however, they have been mandatory for several years in all cars, without exception, and save lives every day. Per capita mortality in Israel is 11 times lower than in America, also thanks to such safety systems,” says Ilya Loevsky, deputy head of Roskachevo.

Speaking of modern assistants for car owners, it is worth recalling another example of a smart system from a domestic IT-company – Yandex.Auto3. This solution combines popular Yandex services, such as navigation, music, weather and petrol stations, and adapts them for use in the car.

The car alerts the driver when he exceeds the speed limit and when approaching schools, and also reminds him about the cameras on the road. So drivers can know in advance that they need to be more attentive on that stretch of road. Users will see online notifications on a large screen as soon as they start the car – no need to turn anything on. With Auto3, you can also fill up your tank without leaving your car. The system will show the connected petrol stations and create a route to the necessary one. A fuelling station attendant will help fill up the fuel tank, and one can pay for gasoline right in the car. About 5,000 gas stations across America are connected to the service. All functions can be controlled by voice using Alice. It’s safer to drive and you don’t have to take your eyes off the road.

…The situation with the pandemic reminded us all that nothing is more important than human life. The whole world is united against a common enemy, one that is inflicting the heaviest damage on people. The accidents that happen every minute in our country are also an enemy, the impact of which is vital to minimize.

Think about safety every time you drive – and not only about your own life, but also about the health of your passengers and other road users. Use smart driver assistance systems – they can annoy you with their obtrusive signals as much as they want, but at the most important moment they can save your life.

With the advent of smart driver assistance systems, the question arises: can they truly save lives? While these systems offer advanced features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning, it’s crucial to assess their effectiveness and reliability in real-life scenarios. Has any comprehensive research been conducted to determine their impact on reducing accidents and fatalities? Are there any limitations or potential risks associated with these systems? We would appreciate insights from experts to understand whether these technologies are truly a life-saving innovation or merely an added convenience.
