In case of emergency many cars will be able to brake by themselves. Bosch evaluates driver assistance systems

Stuttgart, Germany – According to 2015 vehicle registration statistics from Bosch, many new cars in Germany can already brake automatically in critical situations. Findings show that one in four new cars registered are equipped with automatic emergency braking to prevent collisions.

Bosch rates driver assistance systems

– Every fourth car registered in Germany in 2015 was equipped with an automatic emergency braking system

– Emergency braking system can reduce injuries in rear-end collision accidents by 72%

– Dr. Hoaisel, Bosch board member: “Driver assistance systems pave the way for automated driving”

– About 3,000. Bosch engineers around the world are working on driver assistance and autonomous driving and parking systems

Adaptive cruise control is also popular with new car buyers. In 2015, 11% of new vehicles were already equipped with it.

Parking assistance systems – from audible alerts to steering assistance – are used in every second new car in Germany. 16% of new cars are able to monitor changes in their lane or stay in their lanes on their own. 11% of New Vehicles Are Equipped with Traffic Sign Recognition Cameras.

“Driver assistance systems strengthen their market position and pave the way for autonomous driving,

– states Dr. Dirk Hoheisel, member of the board of management at Bosch. –

The more familiar drivers are with assist systems, the better their attitude toward autonomous driving.”.

Automatic emergency braking system is also gaining popularity in Europe

The automatic emergency braking system is becoming more and more popular in Germany as well as in other European countries. In 2015, 32% of new registered vehicles in the Netherlands were equipped with a brake assist system. In Belgium the figure was 30% and in Spain 16%. In the U.K., 21% of all new cars sold can provide emergency braking assistance to drivers. One reason for the widespread popularity of electronic assistants is the European new car safety assessment organization Euro NCAP. Driver assistance systems are a prerequisite for the highest rating of 5 stars.

Automatic emergency braking systems use radar and/or a video sensor to monitor the area in front of the vehicle. If there is an obstacle in the vehicle’s lane in dangerously close proximity, the device warns the driver. If it does not respond, the system automatically performs emergency braking. According to a Bosch crash study, about 72 percent of all crashes in Germany in which collisions involve hitting a vehicle in front could have been avoided if all vehicles had been equipped with an automatic emergency braking system.

Driver assistance systems pave the way for automatic driving

From braking and maneuvering to acceleration, the assistance systems insure the driver in difficult or critical traffic situations and automatically intervene if necessary. In doing so, they make traffic safer and help drivers get to their destination at the cost of less stress, avoiding the creation of accidents on the road. The work of electronic aids are based on sensors equipped with radar, video and ultrasound technologies which monitor the space in front of the vehicle. Driver assistance systems are also a precursor to automated driving, which in the future will allow cars to make their own way from point A to point B. More than 3,000. Bosch developers are now working on new driver assistance systems – and therefore on developing autonomous driving and parking processes.

Bosch study based on 2015 new car registration statistics

3.2 million new vehicles were registered in Germany in 2015. Bosch used information from service provider IHS Markit as well as 2015 statistics on new vehicle registrations from the German Federal Motor Vehicle Office to evaluate driver assistance systems. On this basis the most popular vehicle models in each segment have been identified. The availability of appropriate driver assistance systems was determined on the basis of information on the vehicles’ equipment.
