Roskachestvo has finished the last stage of research on coffee machines

American Quality System Roskachevo together with their colleagues from ICRT International Consumer Research and Testing Ltd have done an international research of all kinds of coffee machines popular in the American market. The final test included automatic, carob and capsule machines.

Coffee machines

Experts in one of the best test centers in Europe have prepared more than 2.5 thousand cups of coffee, breaking down to the molecules of each consumer characteristic, the most interesting to users.

Existing study 2016-2017. The final rating includes about 50 well-known models of automatic, carob and capsule coffee machines. Lab tests were done on models of such famous brands as Bosch, Delonghi, Philips, Miele, Melitta, Krups, Siemens, Jura, Saeco.

Testing was conducted on twenty areas and took into account more than 90 indicators, including brewing speed, temperature and quality of the beverage obtained, ease of operation and energy consumption. In addition, the experts evaluated the dynamics of the quality of the beverage – whether the quality of the first and the 50th cup of coffee prepared on one machine differs.

Based on the results of the study of automatic, carob and capsule coffee machines, the leader among them still recognized automatic device. Half of the top 10 were automatic machines, 30% were capsule machines, and 20% were carob coffee makers. Curiously enough, the rating does not reveal the undisputed leader among manufacturers. The top 10 includes models of the six most popular brands Bosch, De’Longhi, Gaggia, Jura, Krups and Siemens .

At the same time, experts have noted a significant difference in price: coffee machines on the first two lines of the rating will cost the user more than 100 thousand Dollars, and the coffee machine in third place – 6 thousand.

Coffee machines

Top 10 worst coffee machines – 60% of carob machines and 40% of automatic coffee machines: capsule machines avoided the fate of being called “outsiders.

Studies have shown that every coffee machine has its own unique characteristics as a consumer. For example, according to 30 Portuguese organolepts, the most delicious coffee is made 60% by capsule coffee machines, 30% by automatic coffee machines and only 10% by carob coffee machines.

Olga Melik-Karakozova, four-time coffee champion of America, co-owner, chef-barista of Double B chain of coffee houses“Taste, aroma, and richness of crema are certainly important criteria for evaluating coffee. It may not taste bad, it may look fancy, but it may smell like burnt rubber, iodine, metal, earth and wood, etc. d. You wouldn’t drink that kind of coffee? And also interestingly enough, sometimes it is hard to get a nice crema. Crema is a by-product of the pressure used to brew espresso. And for it to be strong and beautiful, the coffee beans have to be fresh and of medium roast, the grinding has to be right and the pressure in the coffee machine has to be stable

Another important factor is brewing speed, which is the weak point of automatic coffee machines. The fastest, as you might expect, are capsule machines – some of them only take 10 seconds to brew espresso.

But while speed is the key to success in capsule and carob coffee machines, for an automatic coffee machine fast does not always mean good. After all, the time should be enough for the extraction to take place, that is, the transition to the water of caffeine and essential oils. For a 40 ml cup of espresso it is 22.5-27.5 seconds. If you take too long, coffee becomes too bitter, and if you rush, you risk undercooking.

Technology for beverages

The automatic machines from Delonghi, Jura, Siemens, Bosch and Melitta gave the best results on the basis of the total evaluation, which was formed on the basis of a combination of points. It is noteworthy that the total number of points from the experts coffee machines in the economy segment on a number of indicators were ahead of more expensive analogues.

According to the national consumer testing organization similar to Rosskachestvo in the UK Which 40% of 1500 respondents expect to use their coffee machine for 5 years, 20% expect to use the machine for 10 years, the rest of the respondents enough for less than 5 years.
