Nikon 1 V2 mirrorless camera review

Against the background of the new flagship V3, the suddenly outdated V2 seems like a very attractive buy for those who are used to saving money. Of course, the outstanding speed and optimized ergonomics are not available here, but it’s still a fast and small camera with an abundance of settings and manual control options. And if we consider that it is offered at a lower price than a number of much less capable amateur “systems”, enthusiastic photographers should certainly consider it when choosing a camera.

Compared to most mid-range “system” cameras, the V2 looks like a baby. A magnesium alloy body and a large, quite comfortable grip make the unit comfortable to use and well-balanced. Two wheels for selecting settings give you relatively quick control over the shooting parameters.

The speed, common to all Nikon 1 cameras, is reinforced here by fast electronics response to user input and fast, sensitive hybrid autofocus. The compactness is not least due to the small one-inch sensor. Since during the shooting two processors are involved simultaneously, each of which is responsible for its front work, it was possible to achieve impressive if not so record-breaking, as in the V3 performance. Capture images at up to 15 fps and keep the subject in focus. The electronic shutter needed to provide such speed is complemented by a mechanical shutter in the V2, unlike the younger models. It’s needed to prevent an effect called rolling shutter, which is the distortion of the geometry of moving objects in an image. Nikon has even announced a guaranteed life of 100,000 operations for the mechanical shutter: no matter how you look at it, but the device is positioned as a senior representative of the system.

The Nikon 1 V2 mirrorless camera is a decent option for photography enthusiasts looking for a compact and versatile camera. It offers good image quality with its 14.2-megapixel sensor and produces sharp and vivid images. The autofocus system is fast and accurate, making it easy to capture moving subjects. Overall performance is solid, with responsive controls and a good range of features.

However, there are some drawbacks to consider. The 1-inch sensor may not perform as well in low light compared to larger sensors. Additionally, the lens options for the Nikon 1 system are limited compared to other mirrorless systems.

Ultimately, whether the Nikon 1 V2 is a good investment depends on your specific needs and preferences as a photographer. It may be worth considering other mirrorless cameras with larger sensors and more lens options before making a decision. Personal experiences and insights from other users can also help you make an informed choice.
