Nikon 1 J4 mirrorless camera review

The fourth generation of “system” cameras Nikon J series to a greater extent than its predecessors, meets the generally accepted idea of what should be a modern amateur camera. This novelty is well-balanced in terms of functionality, size and control structure. In terms of interface and set of shooting controls, the camera is more friendly to beginners. In doing so, it offers both creative and recreational tools.

A noticeable innovation is the touch-sensitive display. The touch screen interface does not cancel the possibility to use buttons and wheels more habitual for cameras, but complements it nicely. sliding your fingers across the screen makes it very easy to manipulate the palette of artistic software filters, applying the desired effect in the desired amount in a certain area of the picture. By the way, the complete lack of in-camera photo processing and conversion tools was one of the strangest features of previous Nikon 1 amateur cameras.

The V3’s improved electronic performance and the latest phase-autofocus sensor. So, despite the noticeable increase in resolution, and therefore the amount of graphic information to process, the J4 can now also shoot 20 fps with continuous autofocus. True, the buffer memory is smaller here, so the series will be shorter. Video mode also increased in frame rate when using Full HD format, and a variety of video modes, functions of slow motion on the screen in viewfinder mode were implemented even earlier and passed in the novelty in full.

It will not be very handy to transfer the footage to the J4 through a memory card reader, because the media used are microSD cards – extremely tiny, quite fragile, and most importantly designed to get lost. Wi-Fi photo and video transmission is an alternative: not so fast, but much more reliable. And saving on your computer as an intermediate action can be ruled out and immediately send pictures and clips to online galleries or social networks.
