New Leica SL2 introduced

Leica Camera has announced the launch of the new Leica SL2, based on the Leica SL camera released in 2015. The new SL2 is another step towards the all-rounder. Leica has reviewed comments by photographers and current SL owners and has improved technical performance while staying true to tradition in design. In addition to innovative technology and quality, the Leica SL2 features improved ergonomics and a simplified menu system with only three buttons – the result of the consistent design across the Leica product family. New functions, such as an integrated image stabilization system, further unleash the potential of the legendary Leica M lenses, while extending the range of SL lenses. The SL2 is the next step in the evolution of the Leica SL technologies, giving you a glimpse into the future of digital photography and video, while staying in touch with the past and the legendary heritage of the brand.

Crafted with care

Leica SL2: The only mirrorless camera designed and built in Germany. The high-strength, full-metal body and leather-lined exterior protect the camera from external influences and the constant, guaranteed software updates will keep it safe for years to come.

Optimised design with new menus

The Leica SL2 features an innovative user interface, whose efficient design allows photographers to fully concentrate on the creative process. Design convergence with the M and Q systems makes it even easier for Leica photographers to choose the right settings. Key shooting parameters can be quickly viewed and adjusted on the rear display at the touch of a button. A scroll wheel, joystick and three conveniently located, customizable buttons also make the camera easy to operate. Two separate menus for video and still image capture allowing independent settings for each mode.

Ease of use in any situation thanks to improved ergonomics

Despite the many new features added and the built-in stabilization system, the Leica SL2 retains the same compact size as the previous generation model. Better casing design and more accurate overall image quality&oacute The Leica SL2’s superior reliability makes it a convenient tool for any shoot. IP54 rating provides even greater resistance to bad weather conditions, when the photographer doesn’t have to think about the weather to fully focus on the shot.

47 megapixel CMOS sensor for superior image detail and quality

The unprecedented high resolution of the Leica SL2 CMOS sensor delivers full-frame imaging and an incredible level of detail and image quality. A wide dynamic range, 14-bit color depth per channel and ISO speeds up to 50,000 mean picture quality is guaranteed in all lighting conditions. Even in combination with Leica TL lenses, which are designed for smaller Leica TL2 and CL sensors, the Leica SL2 sensor offers more than 20 MP.

New subject-tracking autofocus function

Tracking autofocus ensures that focus shifts quickly and reliably. In addition to numerous modes and functions, including face detection, the Leica SL2 autofocus system also automatically detects whether the subject is static or moving and switches between drive mode and focus priority.

Image stabilization by moving sensor

The most important difference between the Leica SL2 and its predecessor is the flexible sensor, which compensates for camera shifts quickly and efficiently by repositioning the sensor. This technology makes it possible to stabilize the image even with lenses that don’t have optical stabilizer.

In addition, in multi-frame shooting, the tripod mounted camera can take up to 8 consecutive images with an offset of half a pixel in between. Capture incredibly detailed images that quadruple the resolution of approximately 187 megapixels.

Higher resolution EyeRes® viewfinder

The camera’s electronic viewfinder now has a resolution of 5.76 megapixels, allowing for a larger, more vivid viewfinder image. You can also use the touch screen, which now has a larger 3.2-inch diagonal and a much higher resolution of 2.1 megapixels.

High-speed operation thanks to new Maestro III processor

New Maestro III processor for superior SL2 performance in all situations. Autofocus is now able to focus much more quickly and with virtually no time lag in activating the shutter. New Smart AF autofocus mode switches autonomously between focus priority and shutter priority. At full resolution, continuous shooting is possible at up to 10fps with focal plane shutter and up to 20fps with electronic shutter. Dual UHS-II SD cards enable simultaneous recording of JPEG and DNG formats.

Ideal for movies

Leica Sl2 allows you to shoot video at up to 60 frames per second in Cine 4K and up to 180 frames per second in Full-HD. Activating Cine mode turns the Leica SL2 into a professional cine camera: ISO changes to ASA, shutter speed is given in degrees on the shutter disc and f-stops, which mark the aperture value, are replaced by t-stops, indicating the real amount of light passing through the lens. No more adapters are required to connect audio equipment, as the camera now features built-in headphones and a MIC connector, as well as an HDMI adapter for external monitors.

Limitless connections

Thanks to the L lens mount, the Leica SL2 is not only compatible with the growing range of Leica SL2 lenses, but also with the lenses of the Leica TL system as well as the legendary M, S and R lenses via adapter, which makes it possible to use the camera with 170 different Leica lenses, ensuring the right combination for every scene. The L-Mount Alliance strategic partnership provides even more options, allowing you to use Sigma and Panasonic lenses that are compatible with the L-bayonet.

Leica FOTOS application

The new Leica SL2 supports the universal Leica FOTOS app, available for Android and iOS smartphones. Leica FOTOS connects directly to the camera via Wi-Fi, also supports Bluetooth® if available, and stores registration data so that future connections between the camera and the app are as quick and convenient as possible. Leica FOTOS allows photographers to use the camera in Live View and remotely change settings such as aperture value, ISO, shutter speed and exposure compensation from a smartphone. The app also lets you remotely control the shutter, opening up entirely new creative possibilities.

Thanks to high-resolution displays on today’s smartphones, images can be viewed in full size in real time to assess their sharpness. Exposure metering is also displayed to help make adjustments for future shooting.

After selecting individual shots, they can be shared on social media or saved for post-processing on a smartphone. Leica FOTOS can be used in conjunction with many popular post-processing applications. Images can be transferred to the appropriate application in DNG RAW format to take full advantage of digital imaging capabilities.

Price and availability

The Leica SL2 will be available in America after November 21, 2019. priced at 446,250 Dollars.
