New generation mirrorless Sony α6400 with AF by eye, real time subject tracking and world’s fastest autofocus open for pre-order

Sony announces the opening of a pre-order for a new model in its line of mirrorless E-mount cameras, the α6400 ILCE-6400 . The camera brings many of the latest technologies from Sony’s famous line of full-frame cameras into a compact, lightweight body with an APS-C sensor.

The α6400 boasts the world’s fastest autofocus that sharpens in 0.02 seconds and also introduces new autofocus and real-time tracking capabilities – the &lsquo real-time eye AF’ and &lsquo Real Time Object Tracking’. There’s also fast continuous shooting at up to 11fps with tracking autofocus/auto-exposure, a next-generation BIONZ X image processor that delivers outstanding image quality, 4K video recording, a 180-degree LCD touch screen and a host of other features that make this camera the perfect tool for photographers of all levels from professionals to everyday vloggers.

Highly responsive, allowing you to catch decisive moments

The α6400’s impressive autofocus system inherits many of the technologies from Sony’s latest line of full-frame cameras, including the α9, α7R III and α7 III. The new camera has 425 phase AF points and 425 contrast AF points that tightly cover the entire image area, covering about 84% of its area. This fast, high-performance tracking AF system combines with the latest BIONZ X processor to enable the camera to focus in as little as 0.02 sec. and capture the subject extremely effectively. This ensures easy tracking and shooting even for very fast-moving subjects.

The α6400 introduces improved autofocus &lsquo Real-time eye AF’, the latest version of Sony’s popular technology &lsquo Eye-tracking AF’. This exciting new feature uses artificial intelligence-based subject recognition to search for and process eye data in real time, improving the accuracy, speed and efficiency of the tracking function &lsquo Eye AF’. Now by pressing the shutter button halfway in all AF modes, the camera automatically finds your subject’s eyes and triggers &lsquo Eye contact AF’. In AF-C or AF-A modes, you can also select the right or left eye of the subject as the focus point. Auto Right Eye Left Eye can be selected in the menu and Switch Right Left Eye can be assigned to a programmable button. This exciting new technology provides photographers with the confidence that the focus of the subject’s eyes will be flawless, and allows them to fully focus on the composition.

In summer 2019, through a software update system, the feature will be added &lsquo Eye-tracking AF for animals The α6400 introduces Sony’s new real-time tracking mode for the first time &lsquo Real-time Tracking’. This mode uses Sony’s latest artificial intelligence object recognition algorithm. It processes color, object distance depth , and texture brightness as spatial information to ensure that all objects are captured accurately. In addition, when taking photos or videos of people or animals, the artificial intelligence recognizes the position of the face and eyes, and tracks the eyes of the subject in real time with extremely high precision. This mode can be activated by simply pressing down half of the shutter buttonv or it can be assigned to a programmable button.

As for overall shooting speed, the new camera can shoot at up to 11 fpsiv with continuous tracking AF/AE when using a mechanical shutter, and up to 8 fps with continuous tracking AF/AE when shooting silently. At each of these speeds, the camera can capture up to 116 frames in JPEG Standard 46 frames in RAW compressed format, greatly increasing the chances of capturing the perfect moment.

Overall image quality improvement

The new Sony α6400 features a 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor which combines with the upgraded BIONZ X processor to deliver stunning image quality and color reproduction in all shooting conditions. Sensitivity in the standard range up to ISO 32000 for both stills and video, expandable to ISO 102400 for stills, with excellent noise reduction at medium to high sensitivities.

This camera also uses many of the image processing algorithms from Sony’s latest full-frame cameras, which are excellent at suppressing noise, preserving resolution and improving texture reproduction.

Enhanced 4K video recording with fast hybrid autofocus

The versatile α6400 is an exceptional camcorder that provides internal 4K video recording QFHD: 3840 x 2160 with full readout without pixel aggregation to capture about 2.4x the amount of data required for 4K video. The camera subsequently resamples this data to produce high-quality 4K video with exceptional detail and depth. Fast and continuous autofocus during video shooting is enabled by advanced rapid hybrid AF technology that keeps the subject sharp regardless of the scene, even if another subject appears in the frame before it. This advanced AF combined with the touch focus functions make this camera ideal for the many vloggers and videographers who regularly shoot and upload content to the web.

For slow motion video recording in the new camera provides interval recording, in which you can set any interval from 1 to 60 seconds with a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. During interval shooting, the AE sensitivity can be set to “High” “Medium” or “Low” to reduce the exposure variation during the interval shooting.

In addition to the listed functions, for the first time for Sony mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensor, the new model has HLG Hybrid Log-Gamma image profile, which supports HDR live shooting. This allows you to play beautifully realistic 4K HDR video on your HDR HLG compatible TV. Also features S-Log2 and S-Log3xi image profiles for wider color gradation, as well as zebra output, Gamma Display assist and proxy recording functions. This camera can also record Full HD video at 120 fps at up to 100 Mbps, allowing you to later mount video files with 4x or 5x slow motion with Full HD resolution and autofocus tracking.

Upgraded design for maximum usability

The new camera is designed to deliver a high level of functionality and personalization to give the user the ultimate freedom to shoot. New to the α6400 is a flip-down 3-inch LCD screen with 921k resolution that flips 180 degrees and allows easy and efficient framing when taking selfies in both stills and video. Using this feature, vloggers will be able to check and control composition throughout the entire shooting process. The LCD screen is equipped with touch-sensitive functions such as &lsquo Touch Panel’, &lsquo Touch Focus’, &lsquo Touch shutter’ as well as a new feature &lsquo Touch-tracking’ which lets you quickly activate the mode &lsquo Real-time tracking’ with a single touch of the screen.

Equipped with a high quality XGA OLED Tru-finder™ viewfinder, the camera has extensive customization capabilities, with 89 functions assigned to 8 context-sensitive buttons. New features include My Dial and My Menu, menu enhancements, a menu tooltip screen, an image rating asterisks and many more features to make shooting more convenient. The camera uses a rugged magnesium alloy construction, is dust and moisture resistant, and has an extremely reliable shutter with approximately 200,000 actuation cyclesiv. The camera also provides file transfer to your smartphone or tablet when connected to a new app &lsquo Imaging Edge Mobile’xv.
