Mini review of Canon IXUS 255 HS/265 HS compact cameras

Representatives of Canon’s most presentable series of compact cameras, designed for the widest audience of amateur photographers, have struck farsightedness.

If the eldest model in the lineup last year, the IXUS 255 HS, could only offer 10x zoom, the lens of the new 2014 model that came to replace it already offers a 12x zoom. Naturally, the aperture has dropped a bit, and at the same time the angle of view at the wide end has decreased a bit. However, those who are looking for a camera versatile in the choice of subjects, while in a pocket-sized version, these disadvantages are unlikely to notice.

Proprietary HS Technology, used in both models, provides maximum image quality in adverse lighting conditions. 4 megapixel sensor resolution increased while physical size remained the same, requiring the maximum sensitivity to be sacrificed by one step. Considering that the top ISO values are barely usable in practice anyway, this loss is noncritical. But there is hope that in the mid-range the cameras will give a traditionally pleasant picture for the IXUS.

Stylistically, the novelty, of course, remained faithful to the principles laid down at the beginning of the century, repeatedly revised, but unchanged in its basis. The camera got a bit heavier and thicker compared to its predecessor – a natural consequence of a more powerful zoom lens. The basic set of components – a bright 3-inch screen with a PureColor II G matrix, a Wi-Fi module – remain in place. Processor developers have applied the previous generation, but in general, the performance of the camera has grown. Full HD movie recording frame rate increased to 30 fps, and full-resolution continuous shooting accelerated to 3.9 fps.

The Canon IXUS 255 HS and 265 HS compact cameras deliver good image quality with their 12.1MP high-sensitivity CMOS sensors. They perform well in well-lit conditions, capturing sharp and detailed photos. However, in low-light conditions, their performance may be limited due to the small sensor size. While they do feature image stabilization to reduce blur, noise becomes more pronounced in darker settings. The cameras also offer a wide ISO range of 100-3200, which helps in low-light situations. Overall, these cameras are suitable for casual photography in various lighting conditions, but if you need exceptional low-light performance, you may want to consider cameras with larger sensors or more advanced low-light capabilities.
