Indesit found out how household chores are divided between America and Europe

Indesit brand of home appliances conducted an international survey as part of the social campaign #BetterTogether and learned how families feel about the problem of unequal sharing of household chores. Kantar TNS agency commissioned by Indesit surveyed 4,000 respondents in America, UK and France. In America, for example, 68% of the housework is still done by women. The #BetterTogether campaign is aimed at drawing attention to this problem and is intended to inspire parents to go beyond gender stereotypes when raising children.

How are domestic tasks distributed in America and Europe?

Study finds that most housework is still done by women. So, 73% of American women consider themselves responsible for housekeeping. And 85% of British women say they shouldered the burden of organizing their lives. The percentage of French women who say they handle household chores on their own is 84%.

Survey results confirmed major stereotypes about the division of household duties. In America and Europe, women are mainly engaged in the most time-consuming tasks cleaning, cooking, washing dishes, doing laundry, etc. .d. . For example, American women do 68% of all housework. And women in Europe are responsible for 76% of household chores. Men in the three countries surveyed perform tasks such as taking out the trash, fixing the car, and mowing the lawn without the help of their spouse.

Both American and European men overlook the problem of unequal sharing of household chores. For example, 52% of surveyed compatriots believe that together with their spouse they keep the house in order. And only 25% of women agree with the opinion of their husbands.

However, the majority are used to discussing household tasks with family members. About 92% of respondents raise questions about the distribution of household chores as they come in, without discussing them in advance. At the same time in France and Great Britain about 34% of couples under the age of 35 assign specific responsibilities to each other at the beginning of life together. And people over 40 agree to share household chores only as needed.

Indesit also found out the respondents’ attitude to the problem of gender inequality. In America, unlike in Europe, the issue of unequal distribution of household responsibilities is not perceived so categorically. Only 27% of American respondents would like their partner to be more involved in household chores. And 10% of American women admitted that they do all the housework themselves. In the UK 41% understand the urgency of the problem. Thus, 42% of women believe that they do all the work alone. In France, 39% of those surveyed need more support from their partner. 50% of French women complained that all household chores only fell on them.
