Summer 2020. Zukunftsinstitut on behalf of Siemens Home Appliances conducted a study on āKitchen and Housekeeping after Coronavirusā.
A total of 2,048 people over 18 were asked.
- Cooking is important to 62% of Germans.
- Good food gives a positive mood to 55% of respondents.
- 30% of city dwellers are prepared to spend money on their kitchen.
Urban dwellers have been hit harder by the quarantine than rural dwellers their daily lives have changed more, almost come to a halt.
- 67% of respondents think that the design of the house is extremely important in this situation, and that the kitchen has become a kind of anchor.
- 36% of those polled believe that a well-equipped kitchen improves the quality of life.
Closed restaurants and cafes have made cooking at home a popular pastime.
- 62% of Germans still cook for themselves. Not many would like to go to the store very often.
- 66% of the respondents believe that they should always have fresh food at home. This may contribute to the demand for large refrigerators with keep-fresh zones.
- 17% of city dwellers use their kitchen as a home office.
- For 47% of respondents, the kitchen is a meeting place to connect with loved ones.
This increases demands on kitchen design. It doesnāt just have to look good, it has to be functional and handy for many things.
At a time when video conferencing has become part of everyday life, a neat home and presentable kitchen is a necessity.
- 36% consider āaesthetics and design especially important for home appliances.ā.
- 40% of respondents believe the future lies in compact appliances that can be stowed away or retracted as needed.
- Multifunctionality was favored by 61% of respondents.
- Quiet appliances are important for 72%.

Always having the latest technology is important to nearly half of respondents today 44% , compared to 26% of the entire population. That need has grown significantly: in 2019, even for city dwellers, the rate was just 29 percent

Remotely controlled appliances, whose software is updated regularly and which can be adapted to individual needs, will be in demand.
Nearly half of those polled wanted the smart technology to give noticeably better washing results, or for the hob to automatically ensure that nothing boils over or burns.
Efficiency, versatility and ease of use ā thatās what appliance buyers are willing to pay for.
