Daytime shooting with Nikon DF: faces in the frame of Khabarovsk

REVIEW * FIELD TEST * SPECIAL PROJECT * PHOTO CONTEST

I had just an hour in the wonderful city of Khabarovsk, on my way from Birobidzhan to Amursk. What can be photographed in such a short time? Landmark locations, faces on the street. At the same time let’s check out the focusing system when shooting with two high quality variable focal length lenses, which can cover the whole traditional range for a camera of such a high class. This would be a heavy AF-S Nikkor 24-70 1:2.8 lens and a lighter but still comfortable AF-S Nikkor 70-200 1:4 G ED VR lens.

The low sensitivity combined with good weather and closed aperture made it possible to get a technically correct shot, with a sharp foreground and background and good detail work. I suppose this lens could be universal for this particular camera.

Increasing the sensitivity to 400 ISO had no effect on the image quality. The focus occurred instantly to the left side of the frame, the heroine of the image did not even notice the photographer, watching something that attracted her attention.

When shooting against the light, when the important part of the scene is in the shade, the details are preserved both on the face and in the background, which is the bed of the Amur river. It is safe to say that sensitivity of 400 ISO can be considered the minimum for the Nikon Df.

Bridge over the Amur river is a symbol of Khabarovsk. You can’t stop there with a car. The bridge is so long, walking across it could turn into a serious journey. By setting the sensitivity to 6400 ISO, I avoided vibration when shooting through tinted glass, but kept a little lubrication from movement. Center point tracking focus ensured confident focus.

I’m curious to know, how did the Nikon DF perform during the daytime shooting in Khabarovsk? Were you able to capture clear and sharp faces in the frame? I’ve been considering purchasing this camera, so any insights on its performance and image quality would be greatly appreciated.
