The new firmware will unlock the following features:

1. Support for AF with eye recognition when taking photos will become available in May 2019

Autofocus AF with eye recognition indispensable for portrait photography. The eye-recognition AF function under development will be available in both AF-S single-frame AF focus mode for capturing people who maintain the same pose, and AF-C continuous AF mode for capturing people who frequently change body position. This feature is capable of recognizing multiple pairs of eyes, giving the photographer the ability to choose the subject to focus on. It enhances the convenience of group photography.

2. Improved AF/AE function will become available in May 2019

In addition to tracking AF, AE automatic exposure tracking will soon be available in continuous high-speed extended mode. It also brings improvements to AF in low light, which decreases the AF time in stills and movies.

3. Support for RAW video output no date specified

This feature will allow the camera to transmit RAW data in 4K UHD and Full HD resolution. RAW data stream can be recorded in a compatible RAW format using an external recorder. This will enable a rich palette of 12-bit colors, expanding color correction capabilities.

4. Support for CFexpress memory cards no date specified

Cameras with the new firmware will support the new CFexpress memory card standard, providing increased security. These cards improve the speed and efficiency. After the upgrade, camera owners will be able to install both CFexpress and XQD memory cards. In addition to the Z 7 and Z 6, CFexpress memory cards can also be used in Nikon D5 XQD type , Nikon D850 and Nikon D500 digital SLR cameras in the future.
