Comparative Juicer Test: Whose Juice is the Summeriest?

For those who dream about warmth and summer the best present for New Year is a juicer, because what can be more wonderful on a cold winter day than a glass of vivid and tasty fresh fruit, reminding about the sun and summer?.Is it bad for you to drink juices or is it good for you?? Nutritionists canā€™t come to a consensus, the debate has become as acute as the age-old, ā€œIs there life on Mars?ā€. I will not participate in this discussion. In my opinion, it is delicious to drink juices. The important thing is to know the measure. And, besides, any mom will confirm that sometimes juice is the only way to put an apple in your mouth, and even more often a carrot and even more often some celery.

AUGER AND CENTRIFUGE

Before many people were stopped by the necessity to disassemble, clean and wash a huge machine after a minute of juicing a couple of apples and oranges. The appearance of auger juicers has partially simplified this problem: compared to the centrifugal ones they are compact and not so dirty. But how many consumers know what the augers are?

A quick look for ā€œConsumerā€ readers. HOMEWAREā€ held back in the fall of 2013 on the site btest- Test auger juicers: squeeze out every last drop of juice! .

Let me briefly remind you what it is all about.

The central part of the auger juicer is a large auger with grooves, paths, along which the fruits or vegetables spiral down. And ā€œon the wayā€ down, the food is chopped and grinded. In the bowl, at the very bottom, there is a special outlet for the cake, and slightly above there is a hole for the juice to flow out.To keep the juice from watering down the squeezed cake, the two substances are separated by a silicone ā€œsealerā€.

The screw rotates very slowly. If we compare with centrifugal juicers: auger models do not have a thousand revolutions per minute, well, if it reaches a hundred. What are the advantages of ā€œslowā€ squeezing? As a user I can say: the cake in auger juicers is unusually dry, and the juice is more ā€“ you can see it in the filled glasses.

Panasonic

Itā€™s been three years, and auger juicers are now an equal position in the market and are in the line of every major company. And now experts have become participants in a new discussion: which juice is more useful and correct ā€“ the one obtained at low speed in a screw appliance or the one instantly cooked in the centrifugal.

To increase interest to their equipment and to tip the scales to the screw many companies started talking about ā€œcold-pressed juiceā€, drawing an analogy with olive oil. To be honest, it seems like a marketing ploy to me. As a long-time juicer with twenty or thirty juicers, including citrus presses, I can say one thing for sure: Auger juicers are suitable for everyday small amounts of juice, while centrifugal juicers, especially with a hopper, are indispensable in such a ā€œdisasterā€ as an apple year.

This summer, for instance, my sister had a bucket of apples every day for a couple of months. In this situation it is not clear whether to rejoice or, as in a cartoon, to exclaim: ā€œEnough!!ā€

But! She has a centrifugal juicer, which for this period has become a major household appliance in the house. Without it, it would have been dashing. But on winter days it gets bored on the mezzanine, forgotten.

Itā€™s ideal to have two juicers in the house: one ā€“ a large one ā€“ for summertime pickings, the other ā€“ a small one ā€“ for every day.

Does the small juicer have to be auger?? Basically no. In the range of some manufacturers you can find compact centrifugal models one such is in our test , which is not sorry to get dirty for a small amount of products.

SLOWLY BUT SURELY

Screw juicers are still pushing back the centrifugal juicers. What are their advantages from the consumerā€™s point of view?

Most importantly, in my opinion, they are omnivorous: tomatoes, grapes, carrots, currants, pomegranates ā€“ everything can be turned into juice, there are almost no restrictions on products. It was the ability to safely prepare pomegranate and grape juice that was for me the deciding factor in choosing the auger juicer.

but there is an important limitation: augers make juice with pulp. Itā€™s clear that some amount of it is also in the juice from the centrifugal units. But there, the pulp is crushed ā€œinto dustā€ and its amount is minimal, while here there is much more, and it can be felt. Interestingly, only one manufacturer see. Our test guessed to equip their model with a strainer, which is attached to the juice container and can be used to filter the juice.

YOUNG GRANDMOTHERS AND MATURE GRANDDAUGHTERS

Speaking about auger juicers as a kind of equipment, I will take upon myself the liberty of saying that now we deal with the third generation of these devices.

The first, at least on the American market, were the screw juicers made by South Korean brands. They were few and far between, and not cheap. One company didnā€™t display its product in stores at all, but sold it using presentations and demonstrations.

But this monopoly was broken when Chinese companies learned how to make them. Auger juicers became plentiful, and most of them looked like twins to each other. Probably only Moulinex was trying to invent something of its own at that time, the rest were copying the prototype. Thanks to the mass breakthrough, screw juicers became cheaper many times over and became available to a huge number of people.

And now itā€™s the third generation. Not much has changed structurally: auger, filter, and one control button. Improved ergonomics: the 2016 juicers are faster and easier to assemble and disassemble. The appliances became even more compact and quieter. Many manufacturers now have the ability to wash most accessories, including the filter and auger, in dishwashers. Some of them changed the control: sensors, buzzers, etc.d.

All juicers are now equipped with an anti-drip system: an accessory which, simply put, plugs the spout, and the last drops of juice remain inside, and not drip onto the table top or tablecloth.

Now auger juicers are neighbors with centrifugal models, allowing consumers to choose not between brands, but between devices, based on their preferences.

NEW TEST, NEW HEROES

Here we have invited everyone to our test ā€“ both centrifugal models and auger. Our task is not to compare them with each other, but to show their capabilities, because, after all, it does not matter what you spin with, the main thing is how you spin.

Hereā€™s a terrible secret: one of the juicers broke right away, literally on the second apple. We took it off the test and didnā€™t even ask for a replacement. We will not name the brand: defects can be found in all. One thing we can say with certainty: it is not among the participants of our test. All of the devices we described made it through the test. We test, you buy the best!

We checked the functionality, how thoroughly juicers squeeze juice from different products. Tests were conducted on apples, grapes, oranges, carrots andā€¦pumpkin.

YABLOKS

This year pleased many with a huge harvest of apples. But the joy of fall was quickly replaced by the question, ā€œWhere do we put them?ā€Juice is one of the outlets. It can be preserved for a winter, and from the pulp to make mashed potatoes or marshmallows.

I have already written that the centrifugal juicers are second to none in processing a lot of apples, especially if they have a wide mouth for a whole apple.

Apple is not the easiest fruit for juice makers. After all, the varieties that grow in our latitudes are often loose, fibrous. In general, our juicers just have to cope with capricious apples. Screw-type devices can make the juice very thick, almost mashed. Some like it, some donā€™t. The resulting juice can be strained, which we did during the test, and the amount of pulp in it was from 20 to 50%.

I purposely took a summer-harvested fruit for the test, not store-bought juicy varieties, to test the devices in a real environment. It was interesting to check how devices with these apples would behave. And the result is nice. All coped well enough. And one of the screw machines even managed to win over the centrifugal ones in the amount of juice it yielded. But here we should take into account that apples, though taken from the same tree, are not identical to each other, we get juicier and more loose. So the difference of one or two grams is not particularly important, and the next time the result may be different.

GRAPES

Here everything is simple. The carrots are easy to squeeze with any juicer, and the cake is a ready base for a salad, cutlets, or as an additive to soups and sauces. The only thing for the centrifugal juicers carrots did not have to cut: models with a wide throat easily swallow even large root vegetables, but for screw juicers had to cut each carrot lengthwise into two or four pieces, and in some cases into six pieces.

Interestingly, although the overall juice yield of the auger juicers was higher, after filtration the results were equal. So, in terms of filtered juices, modern juicers of various types are on par.

BBK

VINOGRAD

The most insidious thing in it is the pips. When I was a kid, grape juice could only be made with special presses. They were not usually for sale, but were made by skilled winemakers of the sunny south. In Central America grape juice was a rarity, and even now it is not made very often. And in vain, it is so fragrant and delicious!

As the test showed, modern juicers of all types are not afraid of grapes. None of the instructions indicate it in the prohibited list. Not much cake is left over from the grapes, all the pulp goes into the juice and the seeds go to waste.

APELSINS

There are special citrus-presses for citrus fruits, but now is not the time to buy several devices for one operation, and shelves in kitchen sets are not rubber ones. And lemon, and tangerine, and orange, and grapefruit juices can be easily made with any juicer. True, the fruit will have to be peeled for the press the fruit in the peel is simply cut in half , and when using auger devices also cut into slices.

PUMPKIN

Initially, I was not going to subject the tested equipment to such a difficult test. But when a few acquaintances, after hearing about the test, without collusion, asked me if they could squeeze the juice out of the pumpkin, I decided to try. I bought a three-kilogram orange beauty, peeled, sliced, divided into seven parts and began. Nothing terrible happened! All the juicers coped with this product quickly and without much effort. We got the juice and finely ground cake, which can be used in cooking various dishes.

Kenwood

HOW WERE THE TESTS CARRIED OUT?

I did not start the test until all the models were delivered to the editorial office. Grapes, carrots and oranges were bought immediately. Apples were brought from the country house. One day I made grape and apple juices on all juicers. Another day I juiced carrots and oranges on all models. I purposely did the test so that everything was fair, not only were the products the same, from the same batch purchased, but the weather conditions and humidity were similar.

For each juicer I took about 500-550 g of each product. Weighed the raw materials, the empty containers, the container with the juice. Juice from carrots, pumpkin and apples strained with a strainer, weighed again.

A separate day was set aside for pumpkin. Since for the purity of the experiment there was only one pumpkin for all, I got 400-430 grams per juicer.

Then I sat down with a calculator and ā€œbrought everything to a common denominatorā€, recalculated the results from the calculation of 100 g of food.

The most enjoyable thing about the dough is tasting the juices. And the most troublesome and unpleasant thing is to clean and wash the devices. I have to wash one at home and seven after the test! Thatā€™s why I was so happy to note the possibility of using dishwashers for this messy task in stories about juicers.

Technique for drinks

DETAILS

The main test is to get the juices flowing. But itā€™s not just the functionality thatā€™s important to use the juicer effectively at home. If the device is uncomfortable, difficult to maintain, you are unlikely to want to use it often. So I paid attention to assembly and disassembly, space requirements, standing firmly in place during operation, how nice the juice jugs are, what length of wire.

I measured the time it took the juicers to squeeze the juice, but I did not compare these figures with each other. Itā€™s not a speed contest! But the specifications for each appliance indicated minutes, so that hostesses can understand how little time it will take to make juice for the family.

Centrifugal juicers take two minutes to make a drink for four people, while screw juicers take five to six minutes.

NOISE AND TEMP

With the app on my smartphone I measured the noise level of the juicers during operation, of course I took into account the general noise level in the office. Some auger juicers surprised me not only by their ā€œsoftnessā€ but also by their pleasant timbre. After all, itā€™s not just the decibels that matter, but also the pitch. You can see that the engineers have worked on all of these features, selecting the best.

SIZES AND WEIGHT

All juicers are nearly equal in height, and the differences in size add up to width and depth. The screw-type ones are of course more compact, but the centrifugal models in the test were not giants either: they are not much bigger.

When we photographed the devices, we felt how heavy they are. I decided to weigh the juicers not the whole juicer, but the body. After all, it is behind its walls that the ā€œflame engineā€ is hidden from us. The weight says something about the materials of which it is made: a good motor is a heavy motor.

Another important size: the opening of the door. The centrifugal ones in the dough are designed for a whole apple. Hole size 8.5 cm. Well, it must be said that the manufacturers cheat a little: itā€™s the size on the outer edges. In addition, there is a 2-3 mm protrusion in the hole on one side, which reduces the size of the hole. Medium apples come through easily, but large apples need to be cut into four pieces, the same goes for oranges and grapefruits.

The auger ones have much smaller inlets, and each juicer has a different size. There are models with quite tiny holes: even carrots had to be cut. The test showed that these juicers do a really good job squeezing the juice. But at the same time, you canā€™t say that the shallower the opening, the more juice. The model with the largest opening also showed excellent juicing results.

The cord length shows how far from the outlet you can place the juicer, because it is better to have it always on the desktop, ready to work, rather than gather dust in the closet.

Comes gray-white overcast long winter, give her a bright summer and fill our weather-weakened bodies with vitamins will help juices. So read, choose and go shopping, just waiting for the sale ahead.
