Color in contemporary photography

The School of Visual Arts is enrolling students in artist and photographer Viviane DEL RIO’s “COLOR IN MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY” course. The course is recommended for both beginners and advanced photographers and artists working with color photography and interested in various aspects of the use of color in images. This course is useful for understanding color composition, the properties of color, its formal, semantic and compositional meaning in an image, creating an accent in the frame with color and consists of five theoretical and one practical session.

Photographer Viviane DEL RIO

Vivian Del Rio, member of New York Union of Artists and the American Union of Photo Artists. Born in New York. Spent her childhood with her parents in Cuba. Graduated from the New York State University of Printing Arts as a graphic artist, and completed the Fine Art course at Carmarthenshire College of Technology and Art Great Britain as a volunteer. In photography, painting, illustration, design. Her works have been repeatedly exhibited at solo and group exhibitions. Lives and works in New York.

In the course program

1st class. Objective Laws of Color. Main colors. History of the mutual influence of painting and photography. Specifics of photography compared to other visual arts. Color harmony. Visual “language”. Ways of visual experience. Development of subjective visualization. Assignment 1.

2nd lesson. The camera as an artistic tool. Contrast in color. Contrast of primary colors. Color Composition. Interaction of image elements: color, tone, rhythm, texture, plot. Basic Colors. Transformation of a copy of an artist’s work – bringing the coloring of a painting to the basic colors. Portfolio Review. Analysis of completed tasks from the point of view of composition and color in the frame. Assignment №2.

3rd class. Contrast of Light and Dark. Quantitative relationship of color – mass of the color plane. Simultaneous Contrast. Tone relations. Assignment #3.

Session 4. The importance of tonal differences in the composition of the frame. Contrast of cold and warm. Second order colors, complementary colors. Properties of color to create the illusion of space. Protruding and receding colors. Color temperature. Color and shape. Discussion of homework. Assignment #4.

Session 5. Color photography from idea to realization. Practical lesson in the city. Day off, daylight hours .

6th lesson. Discussing tasks and results of the practical lesson. Summing up. Recommended resources: literature, exhibitions, websites, etc.d.

Time: May 14, 19, 21, 28, June 4, 19.00-22.00 + 1 practical lesson in the city – day off as agreed upon with the group.
