Canon PowerShot G15 compact camera review

The canonical “professional” compact Canon’s G-series really set the standard from the very first model in 2000 has become crowded and difficult in the current market disposition. The mirrorless cameras win in quality in their portable size, the regular compact cameras have gained advanced features like fast shooting and powerful, and sometimes even high-light zooms. Even in its own class, the G15 is “behind” the powerful flagship model G1 X with a large 1.5-inch sensor and true “SLR” image quality. But a certain appeal of a novelty retained: for many experienced amateur photographers it will be a pleasant, capable and affordable compact camera with serious capabilities.

Picture quality is a key priority for the camera’s developers. Features a relatively large 1/1.7 inch CMOS sensor of relatively low resolution 12 million pixels and advanced proprietary electronics. Can not compete with the best examples of compacts or “system” devices G15, but among the closest competitors with “compact” sensor is not the last place.

New items lens retained a relatively small range of zoom 28-140 mm, 5x zoom , but stands out with a decent aperture ratio from F1.8 at short end of focal lengths to F2.8 at long end of focal lengths . Bad news for connoisseurs: the G15 no longer has the traditional swivel display. 3-inch screen with 920K resolution. pix. Although good in terms of quality and readability, it’s hard built into the body. This is one of the consequences of the complex positioning: the G1 X has a flip-down screen, while the new G15 is put on a rigid diet. The camera body has been slimmed down to four centimetres and its weight has been reduced to 350 grams.

The novelty keeps comfortable ergonomics with ample manual shooting control, as well as another traditional element of the series – the optical viewfinder. Functionality is also on par. Fast focusing is complemented by limited but useful features in high-speed shooting, video is written in Full HD with zoom and stabilization. The hot shoe was left on to use external flashes even though it would seem that system cameras are better suited for this . It’s something for beginners to develop their skills, and experienced amateurs will love it as well. But it’s not unreasonable to consider alternatives: the tiny PowerShot S110 or larger, but also more powerful “system” units – depending on what features you expect from your new camera.
