Canon Powershot G1 X compact camera review

The big and a little clumsy G1 X is well and pleasantly handled, and that will no doubt appeal to many experienced and demanding photographers. Strictly speaking, in terms of noise, detail, tone and hue transfer PowerShot G1 X is not inferior to a DSLR like EOS 7D or 60D.

Every manufacturer of photographic equipment sooner or later produces a “cool” model for prestige reasons – not for the sake of wide sales and earnings, but for the sake of discussions and envious sighs of common people, confirming how weak the competitors are and how strong the developers of this particular brand are. The Canon G1 X series was launched for political reasons: to show that Canon, which has been losing the compact system market without a fight, “can still do it. And it can do very well.

In fact, the G1 X by all accounts would be an excellent “system” camera, but due to corporate policy it has a non-replaceable lens. The optics, by the way, high quality and strange properties. Wide angle is not wide enough, the telephoto range is small in view of the impossibility of installing a normal TV set, and the aperture ratio of the lens is not great for portraits and demanding genre. The situation is even worse with macro photography, which many previous G-camera owners love: this model can hardly cope with close-ups and requires a constant change of focus mode. The size of the device and its weight exceeding half a kilogram raise many doubts: junior EOS SLRs are not much bigger and definitely not worse. And in the class of mirrorless competitors, it’s unlikely that most devices will be smaller and lighter.

The answers to the reasonable question “why?”. Developers have invented a new one and a half inch sensor format 18,7×14 mm for the camera. At a resolution of just over 14 million. pix. The density of light-sensitive cells on it roughly corresponds to the level of an average EOS DSLR. From the same camera electronics are taken, and together with a good lens they provide incredible for a compact image quality.

The second reason is ergonomics, which traditionally embody Canon’s longstanding expertise in creating the best popular and professional cameras.

The question of choice, however, is traditionally controversial. Owners of large professional cameras find in the G1 X uncompromising in terms of quality and control “compact” camera. But amateur DSLRs may just as well be used – with the optics still being compatible. Growing-up photographers will also appreciate the G1 X, but competing offerings in the “system” class of compact cameras are tempting not only in function, but also in size and price. We can wait – sooner or later Canon will have to enter the mirrorless market and then it will “show everyone” for sure. How long we will have to wait, however, is not at all clear.
